You know, with the mision that Sakumo failed by rescuing his comrades, I always thought it would be interesting if the mision was to kill the Kazekage (as they were in the second shinobi war, in which the sand participated and the mision was clearly so important for Konoha to shame one of their best shinobi).

Imagine, they were supposed to go without being noticed (because how tf would they win against the Third Kazekage's iron sand if there was a fight), but his teammates were found and surrounded. There, Sakumo had 2 options, leave them behind and complete the mision when the enemy believes they were all killed, or go and scape with the team. He chose the second, and killed a good amount of sand ninja on the process (Sasori's parents included.)

Ohhh that actually sounds amazing.

Sakumo cutting through Suna’s shinobi to get to his teammates, because he thought through multiple attack plans to complete the mission on his own (Kakas got his brains from somewhere and i belive it’s from both parents) but he couldn’t think of a way to complete the mission.

Him vs the Kazekage? He might win, but he might not. There’s a reason it was a team mission and his team went and got caught.

So he make’s the logical call. If he saves his team they can make a new mission. they can work together ad face off against Suna’s shinobi. That’s what they’re taught as Genin after all. Teamwork helps you survive.

And Sakumo absolutly slaughters his enemies. He’s a shinobi that’s stronger than the Sannin and he isn’t taking any prisioners. He’s here for his teammates and if someone gets in his way, he’s taking them down. Sasori’s parents just happen to be some of the people who end up getting in his way,.

And then they get home and everything comes crashing down on him. He’s branded a failure and blamed for the war being started when he was meant to stop it in its tracks. He’s shamed for choosing his team over the mission, even when he tries to explain that he couldn’t come up with a mission plan to complete the mission without his team. No one cares.

No one wants to listen.

No matter how hard he tries, Sakumo faces the same results. He’s a failure for choosing his team over the mission, and he’s shunned by the village for that.
