Mucho Mucho Amor (2020) is about Puerto Rican astrologer Walter Mercado. For years, Mercado delivered daily horoscopes on television to people all over Latin America and the rest of the world. His positive messages filled people with light and love every day.
Before seeing this film, I had never heard of Walter Mercado, one of the most famous and recognizable Puerto Rican television personalities. I was captivated by his capes, jewelry, and theatrical hand movements.
Although he didn’t use these labels, Mercado could be described as genderfluid and asexual. In a time when homosexuality was taboo in Puerto Rico, his obvious flamboyance was accepted and adored by the public. Often queer people’s differences are seen as undesirable, but sometimes they’re seen as special.
I’d love to watch more films about incredible celebrities from around the world whom I’ve never heard of. I’d guess the dialogue in this film is almost equal parts Spanish and English. Lin-Manuel Miranda makes an appearance to put things in perspective for audiences who aren’t familiar with Mercado’s fame.
