Freezer Aisle

I imagine us In the freezer aisle Looking for mixed fruit.

You love honeydew, but that won’t work For the smoothies you want to make. My stomach grumbles while you debate Between buying strawberries or grapes.

I wander off into the snack aisle Where I pick up some popcorn. You laugh at me when I return, My cheeks are stuffed, the bag is torn.

I imagine us in the freezer aisle At that store right by your place. Our hair is still wet from the shower, Neither is fully awake.

Then I zoom off on the cart and Challenge you to three point shots Fruit medleys, waffle boxes, tater tots. You jump, I swerve and bust a block. We bicker, because a loss is still a loss.

I imagine us in the checkout lane Licking our lips At the feast We are About to have And the nap In your bed That’ll follow.

I want to do The everyday with you. Forget the eggs and then Run out of line to get them.

I don’t mind the wait Just doing the mundane. I’ll count out ten limes for a dollar, I’ll pull the ticket at the deli. I love your ordinary. You get the butter, I’ll grab the jelly.
