I've been trying to unravel some tarsus iv facts (so I can draft my own fic, or at least have a satisfactory idea of how to put together the tiny amount of info we have) and found the adaptation of an earlier draft of the script for the conscience of the king.

a few things are different from the episode. for one thing, there's slightly more of a focus on what exactly lenore and karidian mean by calling kirk mechanized and not human. some characters are in different places (lenore is by karidian's side when kirk goes to confront him, for example) or scenes take place in different settings. most noticeably, kevin riley's name is robert daiken.

popular fandom has seen kirk's age and riley's age and decided that kirk must have been the oldest child of a group who ran for their lives. interestingly, the book doesn't even consider this. instead it goes for the holocaust imagery, understandably given that it was still very much in the public memory:

"Remember that I was there on Tarsus -- a midshipman, caught up in a revolution. I saw women and children forced into a chamber with no exit... and a half-mad self-appointed messiah named Kodos throw a switch. And then there wasn't anyone inside any more. Four thousand people, dead, vanished -- and I had to stand by, just waiting for my own turn."

and riley/daiken is mentioned as being five years old at the time.

I am going to make a post combining all the info we have on tarsus iv and kirk's time there, but for now this is just a place to put this.
