somi is three years older than omen; karima had him when she was ~21

entirely unempowered family except for omen (seer)

karima and nadir are muslim, though karima was stricter with it than he was. nadir was stricter with other things though

karima was a stay at home mom, so somi and omen were closer to her than they were to nadir, who worked six days of the week and was distant even when he was home

somi died when he was 17/18, splitting the family apart. currently, omen has no contact with either parent (but in the future will make amends with karima)

his parents are now divorced - some years after omen left california, karima couldn't bear seeing nadir anymore after how he treated omen and how she couldn't/didn't do anything about it, so she filed for divorce

somi was the “golden child” (at least in nadir’s eyes) while omen was the more rebellious/rambunctious one

omen shadowed somi everywhere. they’ve been very close their whole lives

one of omen's earliest (and favorite) memories is of being five years old and baking cookies with karima and somi
