not sure if u've already answered smth like this, but how do u think shizuo & izaya's relationship started?? did they start dating in highschool, who fell in love first, who confessed, ect ect <3

I think I answered something similar to this in the past but it was something like how I thought their relationship would develop and I kinda walked through what I perceive to be the different stages of their relationship. Now idk if you’re referring to like a specific fic I’ve written or anything but I’m just gonna go for my general type approach. XD Cause it’s my brain worm and I have many.
So the first thing is that their relationship always starts volatile and then they end up in a situation where they have to spend time together. Someone, usually Izaya, tries to make the worst of it by being as obnoxious as possible in order to get Shizuo pissed off so he’ll make a mess of things and Izaya can slip away. Just when things look like they might go his way though, Shizuo subverts his expectations. Even though Shizuo always takes it too far, he doesn’t ever cause permanent harm which pisses Izaya off.
Their issue with each other is always a misplaced internal one that stems from their own self-loathing. Shizuo can’t stand someone who uses their skills and abilities to mess with the lives of others and Izaya can’t stand someone who pretends to be something they’re not. The antithesis of each other, but they’ve also got traits that the other admires. Izaya is usually the one who recognizes that his hatred of Shizuo makes no sense and he’s usually the one who realizes quickly that he feels both jealousy and admiration towards Shizuo.
With that said, it’s anyone’s choice who confesses first. I usually go with Shizuo, though Izaya is the one who falls in love the fastest, but in this relationship Shizuo is the one who chooses when they move forward. Izaya is cagey and he doesn’t put himself out there easily because of fear of being rejected, especially by someone who has been so adamant about how terrible they think he is. But when Shizuo confesses, Izaya is like a deer in the head lights, every single time. Even if Shizuo makes it obvious beforehand, the idea that he would act on those feelings is unthinkable. The idea of anyone genuinely liking him for who he is is unthinkable, even if he dropped some of his facade for a little bit and showed a little more honesty. Like, Izaya’s had people confess to him and have feelings for him before but no one who knows him quite like Shizuo does. Someone who disliked him since the beginning and somehow came to like him.
Shizuo is the type of person who takes a long time to work up the kind of confidence it takes to confess to someone so it takes an absurd amount of time for anything to happen. This relationship is just a slow, painful, creeping burn. When he realizes that Izaya reciprocates the feelings and is actually shook by it though, he takes charge in the relationship and is really encouraging. It helps him build patience, even when Izaya is being insufferable.
But basically I think their relationship takes forever to start, but then everything else starts to move very quickly. The affection, the trust, the emotional honesty, it all develops within a few weeks. It kind of has to, because they can’t allow each other to recede back into their self-isolating shells that have kept them alone for so long. It’s all very overwhelming and frankly, Izaya the Flake is living in constant fear. :) The fear is good for his blood flow circulation.
