As many of you know, I'm Jewish, so I don't celebrate Christmas. In recent weeks I've been sharing books about my own holiday, Chanukah, and its history and traditions, and that will continue in a couple of days. Tonight, though, it's Christmas Eve for many of you, and in honour of two of my dearest friends, who do celebrate Christmas, I'd like to share just two very special Christmas books. It's hard to believe that Karma Wilson's "Bear Stays Up For Christmas" (2004) is already 15 years old, but there's no question that it's a classic, worthy of a place in any child's library. Jane Chapman's illustrations are timeless, her animals utterly lovable without being unrealistic looking. And the inimitable Bear and his friends are as personable as ever in this wonderful, silly story of friendship and time spent together at the holidays. Full disclosure: Karma Wilson is my dear friend and one of my most favourite humans. That came about, however, long AFTER I had already fallen in love with her writing for kids. I share this Christmas story, then, both to honour my dear friend at the holidays, and because SHE has genuinely created something special, worth sharing with kids, and I'd stake my reputation on it.
