I was recently watching the movie "I Am Kalam" when I came across this fascinating tale about yet another unusual Indian temple: the Karni Mata temple in Rajasthan, also referred to as the "Temple of Rats." In that scene, the main character visits the rat temple.

What makes Karni Mata Temple in Rajasthan Special?

The reason the Karni Mata Temple near Bikaner is well-known isn't because of its setting or architectural style, but rather because thousands of rats live there and are allowed to explore the premises. Since they are thought to be Karni Mata's sons, seeing or passing a white rat in the temple is extremely lucky. They frequently cross visitors' feet.

The nearly identical-sized rats in this temple are visible coming out of the cracks in the floor, walls, and ceiling, among other places in the building. Even the main sanctum is home to these rats, who go by the name Kaba. For the kaba to eat, a variety of foods are placed on plates, including nuts, grains, milk, fruits, halwa, coconut, roti, laddu, and even alcohol.

There are around 20,000 rats in the Rajasthani Rat Temple, but there isn't a bad odor anywhere on the grounds. The rats do not harm the goods and products in the shops surrounding the temple. The Legend Of Karni Mata Temple

Karni Mata was no typical lady; throughout her life, she encountered many supernatural sorcery that was above the powers of the average person. Karni Mata was born in Jodhpur on September 20, 1378, and her magical abilities were made known to the world shortly after.

Mehaji and Deval Devi, who are thought to be Karni Mata's parents, were Jodhpur-based members of the Charan Clan. Mehaji desired a son, but they had five daughters. Mehaji made the decision to travel to the temple, which is presently located in Pakistan's Baluchistan area, in order to appease the goddess Hinglaj Mata. Hinglaj Mata, pleased with Mehaji's devotion, bestowed a boon upon him.

Deval Devi experienced a dream at this period in which the goddess Durga appeared to her and asked her to have patience, saying that the goddess will give birth from her womb. Deval Devi gave birth to a baby girl after 21 months, who was given the name Ridubai. After hearing the news, Mehaji became irrationally angry about having another baby girl and clenched his fist. After that, he was punished for offending the deity by having his fist imprisoned for eternity.

Depoji did as instructed and Karni Mata then left to dedicate her life to worshipping goddess Durga. During this time she roamed in various parts of Rajasthan helping people. Her magical powers and spiritual work gained her fame and respect throughout the state. She was also invited to lay the foundation stone of the historic fort of Rajasthan like Meherangarh and Bikaner fort.

From a cave close to Bikaner, she lived her entire life adoring the goddess and working marvels until, in 1538, she declared her own death at the age of 151. In the Deshnok village near Bikaner, the Karni Mata Temple was constructed in accordance with her final request so that her devotees might come and give her prayers.

In front of the temple is a modest Karni Mata museum that features a number of sculptures that tell the tale of Karni Mata's life.
