The offense had been minor--nothing more than a faux pas, really--and the resulting annoyance brief. Still, the knowledge that they had done something to upset Amaranth hung with Kassim for the rest of their trip to the market. For her part, Amaranth assumed their withdrawal was a result of the trip. The market was fairly busy, and crowds tended to make the air magician uneasy. So, Amaranth did her best to finish the shopping quickly. Unfortunately, the resulting change in her behavior, namely her bruskness with those who tried to socialize with her and her fast walking pace, only made Kassim feel more like they'd upset her.
When the two of them returned to Kassim's cottage in the forest, Amaranth heaved a dramatic sigh of relief as she set down the bags she was holding and began to unpack them. As much as she loved being out among people, the comfort of being at home with Kassim was unparalleled.
"My love, what was that dish called?" she asked as she put spices away in the cupboard. "You made it last week. It had fish and..." Her hand twirled in the air as she tried to remember the ingredients. "Turmeric, I think? And peppers." Amaranth glanced in Kassim's direction and noticed the slight tremble in their hands as they unloaded groceries. "Kass?"
They didn't turn to her at first, continuing their chore. She crossed over to them and gently removed a bag of herbs from their hand. Her hands, warm as always, took Kassim's and she walked them back to the sofa. After settling herself into the cushions, she guided them onto her lap where she proceeded to run her hands over their arms and wait for them to tell her what was bothering them.
Looking into her honey-colored eyes, Kassim thought to themself that, had someone told them a year ago that they'd come to love someone whose first instinct was always to touch them--that they'd actually find it comforting!--they'd have thought that person out of their mind. But as she held them, they could feel her warmth reaching into them, encouraging them to confide in her.
I don't... I've never...been in a relationship, and I'm going to make mistakes... I just need you to tell me. I need you to talk to me.
As their voice sounded in her mind, their eyes met hers. Amaranth blinked a moment as she tried to figure out where this was coming from. "My love, is this about that woman from earlier?"
Vehana, I swear I thought she was just being kind! I didn't realize--!
Amaranth pressed a kiss to their lips, quieting them despite the fact that they weren't using their mouth to speak. After pulling away, she pressed her forehead to theirs. "I know, my love." One hand smoothed over their silver hair as the other rested on their chest where she knew the mark binding them to her to be. "Our hearts beat as one, remember?"
Kassim's hand came up to rest atop the one Amaranth had on their chest. The mark thrummed with magic in response to her touch, reminding them of their bond. How could I forget, Eros mai? They pressed a tender kiss to her lips, which she accepted happily. As tended to be the case with Amaranth, one kiss led to another, and another, until the groceries were all but forgotten.
