@kataang-100 week 18 prompt: Family

Aang snuck into the room, hands full of warm ginger tea and some large salty crackers wrapped in seaweed. He set them down on the table beside his sleeping wife’s head, and was just about to tiptoe back out when…

“Thanks, Sweetie.”

Aang sat, brushing her hair away from her face. “How are you feeling today?”

“Terrible,” she groaned. “This will help, though.”

“I’m so sorry, Katara.”

“Don’t be,” she insisted. She pushed herself up and took a sip of the tea, feeling it quell her rolling stomach already. She smiled at him. “It’s worth it... to grow our family.”

“Favorite tea?”

Aang hummed and tapped his teacup thoughtfully as he considered the question. “Probably butter,” he offered, lifting his cup to his lips.

“Really?” Katara tilted her head. “I thought you would’ve said that new Oolong tea—the one Iroh named after us.”

Aang choked.

After several minutes of coughing and sputtering, he stared wide-eyed at Katara. “What?”

Katara frowned. “You didn’t know?”

“No.” Aang ran a hand over his scalp, staring blankly. “I never realized…”

When he trailed off, Katara laced her fingers with his. “Would you like to try it?”

He looked over at her and smiled. “Yeah.”

Compromise

“Bumi, give Daddy the necklace!”

But Aang’s crazy-haired toddler just fisted his mother’s necklace tighter and climbed higher into the tree — the tree overhanging the bay, of course.

Aang tried to be stern, “Bumi! Come down right now!”

Bumi laughed like Aang was playing a game. Aang deflated.

“What can I give you for the necklace, Bumi?”

“Fwoot pie!”

“A fruit pie?”

Bumi held up three fat little fingers. “Fwree.”

“Three fruit pies?!”

Aang wondered what Katara would think. Then he decided she didn’t need to know.

“Let’s compromise at two,” Aang surrendered with an affectionate wink.

Bumi beamed.

Fireworks

Aang tilted his head up as another firework exploded in the sky. For the past year, he’d been so intent on defeating Ozai that he hadn’t given any thought to what would come after. This was more than he could have expected.

Katara leaned her head on his shoulder, and Aang smiled. Being next to her was even better than the fireworks.

“I’m really happy right now,” he admitted, “but this is the first time in months that I don’t know what comes next.”

Katara found his hand and gave it a squeeze. “We’ll figure it out together,” she promised.

Prompt: family

The air feels heavy the moment those two words come out of her mouth. They had talked about the subject before, in murmured late-night conversations, always considering it as something for the future with no foreseeable date.

He blinks the shock away, and a smile threatens to form on his face. “Say that again”.

She exhales. “I’m pregnant”. Saying it aloud again makes it seems more real and she smiles. “We’re going to be parents”.

He pulls her into his chest, peppering her with kisses, and her body relaxes in his arms, rejoicing in the bliss of a new beginning.

Aang’s staff leaned in the corner, a rumpled orange robe peaked from beneath the bed. The sheets smelled like him. Kya had tried to change them, but Katara wouldn’t let her. She’d come more undone over those sheets than she had at the memorial.

The bundle of scrolls he’d been reading, his cloak where he’d thrown it, careless over a chair. The stark impossibility of his absence. He’d stepped out to meditate, to check on the bison, to send a telegram. Any second now, he’d poke his head in and ask what kind of tea she wanted.

Any second now.

Guarding

Sokka awoke when blankets rumpled. It was the deepest hour of nighttime. There was never a good reason for camp to stir at this hour, least of all not while they’re undercover in enemy territory.

Behind him, rhythmic motions, deep breathing. He balked. Surely his sister wouldn’t take such a risk, right under his nose.

He rolled over to catch them in the act. Katara’s wet eyes pierced him with the fury of the moon’s unseen abyss, daring him to protest. Her hand made circles on Aang’s scarred back, holding him tucked against her.

He left them to each other.

Kataang 100 Drabble: Spirits

Prompt: Spirits Words:100

It was probably the rice wine talking. Or maybe the clear floral smelling liquor that had been sweet on her lips but burned a path down her throat.

“You have very pretty eyes.”

She feels the deep rumble of his laugh through his chest. His puff of breath is hot against her cheek. Her head feels heavy and his shoulder is an inviting pillow regardless of its sharp angle.

“You smell nice.”

“You smell drunk,” Aang replies as he cups Katara’s cheek and tips her head up, their gazes meeting. He smiles at her, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
