kataware doki concept sketches
katawaredouma (part one) be upon ye
sorry for the silence march was REALLY fucking busy. anyway kataware either this weekend or next bc the chapter is a big one
I just found Kataware Doki and I am so in love! Kokushibo is already one of my favorite characters (what do you mean he turned demon out of envy for his brother yet the fucking flute) and you write him so well. And Douma! Another one of my favorite characters, I understand the struggle with low intensity emotions and being taught that if they aren't strong they aren't there and having to cultivate emotions and choose to feel them and the nuance you tackle him with is lovely.
The Kamados! Inosuke and Rei! (Sleeper favorite, ahe is.) On that note, all your ocs are amazing. The receptionist and Mochi are brilliant. Dragging the mafia in, even just a little? I can't help but imagine the local crime losing their minds because what do you mean the kitsune has an oni now.
I wanted to ask, what does Kataware Doki mean as a title?
it's from Kimi No Nawa/Your Name! it's supposed to mean 'twilight/dusk' but it's not actually a real term. it's a made-up one just for the film, and is the local term used by mitsuha's village for the twilight of the sunset, when you can't really tell if it's day or night. the real term for twilight is tasogaredoki, the origin of which actually comes up in a conversation in a future chapter and is relevant to kokushibo's entire arc this fic, so :) spoilers (also, iirc, katawaredoki was coined by shinkai by flipping the characters in kawataredoki, which means 'dawn')
the characters used to write katawaredoki also happen to mean 'fragment/piece of a whole' (kataware) and 'time' (doki) bc the movie deals with disjointed timelines, time travel, fragments of the self, and a cycle that kept repeating generation after generation until one pair got it right
i chose it as a title for katawaredoki being a time where 'you can't tell if it's day or night'— which is kinda the space kokushibo occupies post-defection, he's a demon, he's still willing to kill humans, but he's also against muzan; for the way it's written; and for how twilight is often said to be the time where strange things happen, and you can meet things that may or may not be human. the fic leans heavily into the supernatural aspect of demon slayer, with the implications of gods and curses and reincarnation, and it also focuses on canon's theme of demonism=humanity taking the easy way out—though it's less of a commentary on the buddhist aspects of the story and more of an inspection of the human part of it
please help i've reread chapter 12 of kataware doki so many times but the conversation between kokushibo and mochizuki still confuses me so much (also what's writing for new media)
long post so under a readmore
preface: new media is basically anything that isn't traditional or legacy media (TV, radio, print newspapers, print magazines, print ads, etc.). media is a very rapidly-changing landscape, though, so the stuff that falls under legacy media might have evolved in the time i was in college and now. but basically
legacy media = usually big organizations/corporations, has gatekeepers in the form of those orgs
new media = independent media, independent creators, most prominent in the digital space
writing for new media was a course that taught us how to do everything legacy media did but without having to jump through hoops to learn from them, as well as adapting and optimizing all of those techniques and skills for modern tech and the modern media landscape (so like SEOs, punchy content titles, punchy scripts, etc).
one of the most important skills we were taught was how to structure words correctly, beyond basic grammar and correspondence. you know how sometimes news headlines can be either clickbait, misleading, accusatory, or absolving? it was basically that, but it wasn't just for titles, it was for scripts, ads, jingles, etc, etc.
this is a skill mochizuki applies throughout their interactions with kokushibo (and notice how i use interaction and not conversation---that completely changes the scope of where mochi applies this skill, doesn't it? that is an example of deliberately choosing words). let's break down this piece of dialogue:
pacing around the gc going 'this is smth i would add in my usual og works but is kataware's rating mature enough for this' while my friends throw tomatoes at me and just tell me to bite the bullet
me thinking about the future mini arcs in this new KD arc
im working very very hard on editing KD11 💪 hoping to have this up either by the 13th or earlier. i forgot what ive written down tho bc i started writing kataware january of last year and now im going 🫢 at the drama
