What is an actor?

What is an actor?

An actor is an artist, you are the blank canvas and you paint the picture for those you cannot see. An actor to me is being able to let the character take over you. You have to be able to be a blank canvas so that you can be made into any role and shaped into what is needed. You have to be able to convince yourself and others around you what you’re saying is natural and perceive the character to the audience through truth so that it is believable. An actor is also a storyteller, as an actor you are constantly telling a story. You are telling the story of the character, showing the feelings of the characters and relationships to others.

“Good actors can’t learn their lines until they know why they’re saying it”

This was a quotation of an actor at the national theatre. I believe this is 100% true, if an actor just learns there lines, they are simply reciting and anyone can do that. A teacher recites, A doctor recites, everyone can recite. But an actor looks into the meaning behind the words and says to themselves why? Why am I saying this? What is the character feeling at this point? As an actor you need to understand the reasons before delivering the lines so that you and the audience can feel that it is real and believable. The hardest part of acting is the lines need to seem spontaneous, if you think of it in a real life situation and there is for example an argument and this is the scene you are performing it is all rolled off the tongue, not thought out for hours on end. This is what needs to be perceived; however many times you rehearse you need it to be like it was the first time you have ever said these lines even after your tenth show.

An actor is an explorer. As an actor you explore lots of different thing, you explore ways of speaking and movements which interlink into what the character is speaking about. An actor has to be able to take risks and this is a really hard task. I know for me personally taking risks is a downfall of mine; you have to be able to discover new things in each rehearsals. You are intrigued into knowing more on the character and of the piece, so do extra research to get the better knowledge and understanding.

An actor in a company not only relies on themselves but others around them, this means everyone has to pull their weight. “You are only as strong as your weakest link” This quotation means there may be brilliant actors in a company but if some don’t pull their weight the whole piece will collapse. In a company you need a ‘sense of community’ this is being able to trust one another, to take risks and explore without feeling insecure in front of your other actors.  An actor needs to let the character take over them, this means you have to get into the mindset of the character. An actor may often feel lonely, alone on stage but the nerves turn into positive energy.

Acting may seem to ‘normals’ as an easy job, you simple pick up the paper and read what it says… right? No. Acting is one of the toughest; you need to change for a certain part. You are a blank canvas, no matter what you are like outside the rehearsal space, in it you are blank canvas. And whatever character you are chosen for you need to perceive this as, you. You are that character. Acting is very hard but the reward is amazing. Acting isn’t a job as such, but a passion. Only those who are really passionate really make it to the top, you get constant knock backs but you never give up on your passion.

Overall an actor is something which can be described different to each person. But to me, I feel you are a storyteller, an artist and an explorer. You paint the pictures for others, you tell the characters story and you explore the stage and new and interesting ways in each and every rehearsal time. An actor takes the audience on a journey, of the character, of the piece and the feelings and emotions within it, making the audience see the picture you are painting in a new colorful light.

Kate Allsopp - Personal Statement

Acting is a spectacular explosion on the stage of creativity, exploration, confidence and finding the ability to be able to play and have fun within the specific character. Playing is something we often lose on our war to become an adult, we are told to "stop playing" and to, "grow up", however, with a passion and love for the craft, it's a must and that's what acting is to me. Acting has always been a part of my life and has always interested me as you can explore yourself as a person through it, you can develop skills to gain confidence and when the shows done that buzz, that feeling from within is worth the sweat, blood and tears you've put into it. I know it is my future. I am currently training as an actor at the Miskin Theatre; I am in my second and final year of the Advanced Acting Course and thoroughly enjoying it. Through Miskin I have been able to develop a huge amount not only as an actor but as a person knowing the heights I am able to go to. I have gained a huge amount of confidence and really have a first hand view of life in theatre, I've learnt the expectations and needs to be able to be a part of a company in discussions, performances, physical theatre and using aerial skills. The experience of working in a real theatre environment has given me the opportunity to stretch my understanding and to discover myself as a young actor. It has also made me determined to continue and develop my training.I have worked with a number of directors and in a number of productions playing to a paying public including: After Juliet written by Sharman Macdonald:Directed by Bronagh Lagan, Playing Alice. Playing Barbara a young witch and principal character At senior school, I took part in the Shakespeare school festival in which four schools come together to put on a different piece of Shakespeare all performed in a professional theatre. I believe as an actor I am very versatile, I have previously played parts of fat drunken men,to snobby uptight girls and a crazy witch who can fly. I believe I can do a range as I look deep into the character knowing how to behave while putting my own twist onto it. I have always had positive reviews on my monologues as I believe I am a confident actor who can be alone on stage and can still captivate the audience. Acting is more than a hobby for me it is a strong interest of mine. I dance and have a background in gymnastics. Since the age of 15 I have worked in local shops learning for myself about business about business and the financial side of life. Earning my own money has really made me learn how to manage mine and I think I have learnt life lessons and become a responsible adult because of this. I know Acting is a tough industry but its something i love and has always been a dream of mine so i am determined to make it in the art world. I aspire to be a successful actor and this course would help me on the road to acting as a future.

"When everythings made to be broken, i just want you to know who i am"

Transporter review

Well, what a way to transport me through different genre's of classical known songs from the last few decades! Watching the music gig on Friday I wasn't too sure on what to think, I was front of house on Thursday so got a small feeling of it however only hearing small parts couldn't make me have an opinion on it! I really loved the gig, the music was always on point and the musicians were constantly in the moment. From an actors point of view id just say the small fidgets on stage were something to work on but I loved The different genre of music and there really was something for everyone. A performance that really stood out for me was the song iris by goo goo dolls, this has always been one of my favorite songs and the performer was really breath taking and I was constantly in awe of him and the performance, He made it his own and even though this is a constantly covered song, his was different to a lot of others i have heard, i really loved it. It was nice how they switched from different genre's and the staging went back and forth as you were constantly looking around eager to know whats happening next. It was clear to see how much effort was put into the show and it really did pay off. I loved how they had rapping to ballads to group songs it really covered all area's. Another performer that got my attention a lot was one of the girls (sorry i dont know names) she was constantly giving it her all and her voice was so different. There was another boy who had such a quirky voice i was constantly watching him while on stage. I also loved the ending how it bounced back and forth, and the way it was staged, the way the galileo was like a tennis match worked so perfectly. The atmosphere in the room was constantly buzzing and i was constantly entertained even in songs i did not know. Overall it was really great gig and I really enjoyed myself and it was clear the performers were loving performing their craft is well, it was nice to have a look into another aspect of Miskin and how talented they all are. Great show!

Miskin Venue, Transporter review

The Miskin Theatre are well known for exhilarating, eye catching and rememberal performances and "Transporter" was no let down to the well known Miskin Venue. Expectation can make or break a performance, living up to it or breaking the mould and displaying a breath of fresh of air people long to breath. With the miskin name being put on the ticket there was nothing but skillful, risktaking and starstruck performances to be expected and the musicians played up to the anticipation the audience had.

The way the audience were moved along from era to era using different genres of music was magnificent. The music flowed perfectly and the musicians all brought a quirky vibe and appearance onto the stage viewed by so many. A performer which really took to my eye was " " whom sang a numerous amount of songs and had a raw talent like no other. His style was a Ed sheeran/ James Arthur vibe to him and really wooed the crowd. I was so drawn into the performer and was eager for him to appear on stage again. Stage presence is something that will capture your audience and keep them in the palm of your hands, it is always vital that any performer has a percentage of this, however there is a different between confidence, cockiness and stage presence... But a blend of all three goes down a treat.

Punk, Rock and Roll, R&B, Pop, Musicals, Classics and the list goes on was all what we were thrown into. The staging of the show bouncing back and forth from stage to stage was something new and entertaining, however your neck may start to hurt. The feel of the room from the performers and the show itself all rubbed off onto the audience getting everyone up on their feet and really having a good time.

The show was a great watch and I was able to really engage and take a away a lot from it including new takes on songs and ways of performing to really entice the audience. A remarkable show, if you havn't seen it yet I advice you to, you won't be disappointed.

Sniffing around - The Nose Review

I watched the nose today on Thursday 17th ofnJanuary 2013 and it really was an amazing, well thought out show. It had sme brilliant comedy elements with specific timing which worked perfectly. When hearing about a show on a man loosing his nose, honestly I didn't know what to expect as obviously this isn't realistic or is it? I loved how when you walked in you we're welcomed by Sammy who was doing a general greeting but really set up an atmosphere within the theatre of not knowing what to expect from this show. I absolutely loved the local dance that many different character groups had there own small sections within, it worked brilliantly and you could tell there was a lot of effort put into it. Actors within this that really stood out to me was Amy Campbell and Harriet Avery who you could tell was putting in everything and made the dance movements flow effortlessly. I liked within they whole show how they had jokes they would constantly go back to, for example the Sammy and the pigeon joke and the "it's a complete mystery" joke. Pete played his character brilliantly and had a fantastic comedy element within the character which he timed well and really did make me laugh. I love the use of the made up furniture by people as it was a really unique take on it. Another actor which really stood out to me was the servant of the mayor, He whom was another actor which had brilliant comedy timing and played the character with such ease and really looked like he was enjoying himself. Overall it was a really enjoyable show and what took to me the most was the speech at the end by Sammy, There wasn't any fancy words or a specific meaning but just statements on how weird things happen in life and it was something that we all think about but never truly think about. I loved the way the story was developed from such a crazy story of someone loosing there nose, Very well done to all the first year actors on the show a superb job was done.
