Merging her love of infectious pop melodies and dreamy electronic soundscapes, Bath-based newcomer Kate Lomas recently unveiled her latest single ‘Ecstasy’, the hypnotic high which will leave you falling to the next thrill. Collaborating with photographer Silvija Gec (Vogue Italia), ‘Ecstasy’ marks the frst of two singles existing in an audiovisual project offering an immersive 360° experience where the lyrics are visually represented through a photographic timeline.
Immersed in a state of pop euphoria, the single - co-written and produced with Guy Britton - follows the success of Kate’s debut EP Let’s Just Be, released in September 2016. Floating delicately somewhere between the likes of MØ, Lorde and Dua Lipa, ‘Ecstasy’ is the addictive follow up single embodying a texture of cinematic soundscapes and ambient vocal production combined with Kate’s distinctive abstract lyrical stylings and heartfelt vocal delivery, all sparkling over a dancefoor-flling four-to-the-foor groove.
We did a quick Q&A with Kate to find out more about her influences, 'Ecstasy', working with Guy Britton and more. Check it out below.
Where did your passion for music begin and what made you decide to become a singer-songwriter?
"My passion for music probably began with lyrics, I remember listening to Jamie T tracks and being intrigued by his lyrics and the character in his voice. I then began writing my own lyrics and listening to a whole range of music. After I'd written my first ever song when I was 14, I realised that not much else interested me other than creating music, and my music has been developing ever since!"
Who or what have the biggest influences on your music and songwriting?
"It's a difficult question because my influences change so much. I guess my original influences come very much from a singer/songwriter back ground, people like Laura Marling and Keaton Henson completely captivated me with their lyrics and inspired a lot of my earlier stuff. At the moment production has a lot more of a hold on me; I love heavily produced music as well as songs which have really interesting lyrics. Around 3 years ago Flume was probably a turning point for me, he got me into more electronic music. And of course my producer Guy Britton played a huge part in that too."
You recently released your latest single 'Ecstasy'. What was the inspiration behind the track?
"At the time of writing the track I was intrigued by the concept of escapism and setting a dreamy scene within the lyrics and the music of a song. With 'Ecstasy' I wanted to talk about living in the thrill of the moment and moving on from something."
'Ecstasy' was produced and co-written with Guy Britton. What have you gained from the experience of working with him?
"Working with Guy has completely evolved my music and has been such a learning curve for the extra dimension production can add to a song. When we first started working together I was writing guitar-based folk songs and now we're producing electronic pop songs! The journey has had its ups and downs and diva moments (always on Guy’s behalf though!) but it's all been worth it."
You've been working alongside photographer Silvija Gec, on a two part unique audiovisual project (the first part being 'Ecstasy' and the second part to be announced later this year) where the stories of both songs are visually represented through a timeline of artistic photography. What else can you tell us about this project?
"I've been working with Sil to create photos that interpret the lyrics of 'Ecstasy.' As I'm very lyrically oriented this has been such a special project for me. Sil is such an incredible and interesting creative and I'm so excited to bring her creative eye into 'Ecstasy'. We wanted to create photos that capture that feeling of escapism with a slightly grungy darker edge. When we were brainstorming ideas for the photos, something that came up was the concept of 'being so happy you could die', this is the kind of connotations the word "Ecstasy" has for me. I'm so happy with the photos, it's been a real privilege to have this visual dimension on the project."
And finally, what else is next for you? Any plans for another EP or a full length release?
"My next single will be coming very soon... that's all I can reveal so far. But I've got very exciting things coming for 2017."
