HIS FAVORITES BY KATE WALBERT
First book of 2020: She Was Like That by Kate Walbert. A poignant take on womanhood in the past 50 years and present, with all its pleasures, pressures and disappointments. Walbert’s prose has an effortless quality to it. Setting is immediate. Stories are complex yet not crowded. Walbert balances great emotional weight with frivolous hilarity. A truly enjoyable read. Favorite story: “The Blue Hour.” Some gems mixed with some duds. I’ve noticed that people on goodreads.com seem to hate it, but that seems to have more to do with the fact that the book is entirely about the (upper) middle class white female experience.
