This Pride Month, it is important to remember the missing and murdered members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Several cases involving LGBTQIA+ individuals featured on True Case Files remain unsolved today. 

Each week during Pride Month, a set of 3 unsolved cases involving a missing or murdered member of the LGBTQIA+ community will be featured on this page. Let's continue to spread awareness on these cases in hopes that justice will be served.

Katelin Akens was a 19-year old (now would be 20) was visiting her home-state of Virginia between December 1, 2015 to December 5, 2015 after her sister had a baby. She was scheduled to take a 5 p.m. flight out of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport back to Arizona on December 5th, 2015. Katelin’s (former) stepfather was driving her to the airport when Katelin allegedly asked to be dropped off at Springfield Town Center in Virginia, according to a text her stepfather sent at 1:52 p.m. to Lisa Sullivan, Katelin’s mother. Katelin planned to take the train from the Franconia-Springfield stop near the mall to the airport to get to her flight. Katelin had never taken the train by  herself before.

About eight minutes after Lisa got the text from her [ex] husband, she got a text from Katelin saying that she was at the airport but her phone was dying, so she wouldn’t be able to text for a while. Katelin, however, did not get on the flight to Arizona and has not been seen since. Amber Rios, Katelin’s fiancee who was in Arizona at the time, also got a text from Katelin at around 11:56 a.m., saying something came up and she wasn’t coming back that day. She said she would let him know if she could get a new flight.  At 7:15 p.m., Lisa got a final text from Katelin saying that she was staying with a friend and needed some time alone.

The night before Katelin vanished, she went to a party with a long-time friend and that friend’s boyfriend. They all drank heavily and eventually had a threesome. Katelin sent a text to one of her longtime friends about it, in which it sounded like the couple forced her to participate. She was full of guilt, feeling as if she cheated on Amber.

Katelin’s luggage was found two days later in a drainage ditch on River Road near the Fredericksburg city limit. Inside was Katelin’s ID, wallet, phone charger, old glasses, and her plane ticket from Arizona to Virginia. Her credit card was also in there, but her clothes and cellphone was still missing.

Surveillance video corroborated the stepfather’s account of events. However, Katelin and her stepfather were not seen on any of the malls or trains surveillance videos, on the stepfathers car. Police looked at cellphone records of Katelin and her stepfather, and they told a different story than what the stepfather to Lisa. When Lisa got the text from Katelin’s phone at 2 p.m., Katelin saying she was at the airport, but her cellphone pinged off of a tower more than 30 miles from the Springfield Metro stop. Also, when the stepfather messaged Lisa at 1:52 p.m., saying he dropped Katelin off, he phone pinged close to his home in Partlow, nowhere near the airport of the mall. The same moment when Katelin sent Lisa a text saying she wanted to be alone, her phone pinged off a tower in Stafford, less than 15 miles where her luggage was found.

The stepfather refused to cooperate with the police. He still refuses to take a polygraph or give the password code to his phone so they can search it. He also refuses to be interviewed by reporters.

There is no evidence that Katelin ever left Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Her family does not think she left on her own, considering she had just enrolled in cosmetology school prior to going to Virginia and was very proud to start her career. Katelin has blonde hair, blue eyes, weighs around 120 lbs (54.43 kg) and stood at 5’4” (1.64 m).

My sister went to highschool with Katelin Akens and it’s so surreal seeing a post about her. It’s just so scary reading about things like this that happened in your own hometown! It’s also crazy to me that her stepfather hasn’t been charged with anything

I’m from an area near the area where Katelin disappeared from as well - so this case sticks out to me too! And I agree that the answer of what happened to her lies with her stepfather. I hope the truth comes out someday.

19 year-old Katelin Akens has been missing from Spotsylvania, Virginia since December 5th, 2015. While Katelin is originally from the Northern Virginia area, she had been living in Arizona with her girlfriend Amber prior to going missing. At the time of her disappearance, Katelin was in Virginia to visit family—her sister had just given birth to a baby boy, and Katelin had wanted to meet her new nephew. On the day of her disappearance, Katelin was scheduled to fly back home to Arizona. Her mother, Lisa, was unable to take her to the airport and asked her ex-husband (Katelin’s stepfather, not biological) to take Katelin to the airport instead. He agreed, and Lisa dropped Katelin off at his home in Spotsylvania in the early afternoon.

A few hours later, Lisa received a text from her ex-husband stating that he had dropped Katelin off. She also received a text from Katelin’s phone stating that she had arrived at Reagan International airport. However, around the same time, Amber also received a text from Katelin’s phone stating that “something had come up,” and Katelin would not be returning that day. Both Lisa and Amber later learned that Katelin never boarded her 5:40pm flight. Both tried to get ahold of her and were unsuccessful—until finally Lisa received another text from Katelin’s phone at 7:15pm, that stated she “just wanted to be left alone.” Katelin has not been seen or heard from since.

Two days later, Katelin’s luggage was found 50 miles away from the airport—in a drainage ditch in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Her luggage contained her phone charger, clothing, and Amber’s credit card that Katelin had borrowed. When police questioned the last known person to see Katelin—her stepfather—he revealed that he did not actually drop Katelin off at Reagan International airport. Instead, he claims that Katelin requested to be dropped off at Springfield Mall, from where she would walk to the Franconia-Springfield Metro station and take the Metro the rest of the way to the airport. However, there has been no evidence to support that Katelin was ever at that mall or Metro stop on that day.

Katelin’s family members do not believe she is voluntarily missing. After investigating cell phone pings, police revealed that the initial text sent from Katelin’s phone to Lisa, stating that Katelin had made it safe to the airport, actually pinged off of a tower 30 miles away from the airport. The text Lisa later received at 7:15pm on that night pinged off of a tower 15 miles from Fredericksburg. Additionally, the text that Katelin’s stepfather sent to Lisa, stating that he just had dropped Katelin off, pinged near his home, rather than near the mall or airport. Despite all of this, the stepfather has never been officially named a suspect in this case—however, the investigation is still ongoing.

did you hear that Katelin Aken’s stepfather was arrested? They apparently found some more evidence in the case. So excited to see some justice for her ❤️

yes!!! i'm going to update the post soon. this guy is such a creep. no shock whatsoever that he's being charged with sexual abuse involving minors.... i hope he also reveals where katelin is. but if not for nothing, he will be put away for a long time due to this.

When I was reading about the murder of Heather Ciccone, I stumbled onto the strange disappearence of Katelin Akens. The two cases aren’t connected, as far as law enforcement claims, but they have been brought up together more than once because they happened at the same area, on the same weekend.

Katelin is a 19 year old that was in Spotsylvania, Virginia, to visit her sister who’d just had a baby. On December 5th, 2015, a Saturday, she was supposed to take a flight back to Arizona, where she’s currently living with her girlfriend, to start beauty school. But she never got on the plane.

What we know: Katelin’s stepfather (currently separated from her mother, but in amicable terms) was supposed to drive her to the Reagan National Airport, where she was going to take the 5:40 pm flight to Las Vegas, where her girlfriend Amber would pick her up. But according to the stepfather, on the way Katelin asked him to drop her at the Springfield mall, and she would take a train to the airport from a metro station 5 minutes away.

Police has said they have corroborated the stepfather’s car was at the mall at the time he said, but there’s no surveillance footage that will prove Katelin was actually inside the mall, or that she took the train. He’s not considered a person of interest so far. Here’s the strange part, though. Her mother got a text from her at around 2 pm saying that she’d made it safely to the airport. The girlfriend, however, got a very different text, saying that something had come up and she wouldn’t be going to Arizona on that day, and would let her know when was her next flight.

Katelin’s luggage was found on Monday 7th in a drainage ditch 50 miles away from the airport (and only 8 miles away from where Heather’s body was found). Police has said that inside they found some clues that made them hope the teenager was alive. Family has stated that some of those things were her wallet, ID, credit card and glasses. Missing were her cellphone and some clothing.

That’s pretty much all the information that has been made public so far. It’s unclear if the lack of reports is because it’s an open investigation, or simply because police believe Katelin ran away willingly, even though they are treating her disappearence as suspicious.
