Katherine:

She's an apprentice swordswoman against her will because her depraved disaster of a noble uncle, the Mad Duke, thought it would be funnier than marrying her off. Her teacher's the best retired swordsman the world has ever seen (and her uncle's lover) and Katherine makes quick progress.

Katherine, who's a country girl, is also learning the ways of the city in the novel and figuring out who she is while learning to stand up for herself.

She makes an interesting protagonist since she's not at all interested in playing boys and sporting short hair and a sword at first
