of course everybody's entitled to their opinions and takes and headcanons and fanonising the gender and/or sexuality of a character to better fit their reality and experiences.
but everytime i see someone going "jan from but i'm a cheerleader is a butch lesbian" "she's non-binary, possibly lesbian" "no she's actually transmasc!"; i feel like they're kind of missing the entire point of the character.
she wears baggy clothes. she's a softball player. she shaves her head. she's muscly and strong and not as pretty as the other girls. but that doesn't mean that she's not straight.
that's literally the core message of the movie; that gender and gender expression are entirely different things that are completely different from a person's sexuality, as we can see from megan.
megan wears nice clothes, she's a cheerleader, she's a popular girl, she has a boyfriend, she's a pretty girl. but, again, that doesn't mean that she's not gay.
jan is conventionally not pretty nor feminine, but that doesn't define her sexuality which is straight. megan is pretty and feminine, yet that too is not indicative of her sexuality which is gay.
so in short, fanonise all you want, of course; but i just feel like if you think the character should have been a lesbian or trans you're messing an important memo from the movie.
