The beautiful planting of Cercidiphyllum japonicum (katsura tree) at Scampston Walled Garden, Yorkshire, UK, was turning shades of yellow, orange and pink in an autumnal display. The air was filled with the smell of burnt sugar or candy floss given off by the leaves. This must be one of my favourite tree species.

These are the fruits of Cercidiphyllum japonicum (Katsura tree) which is an elegant medium-sized deciduous tree which is a native Japan and China. The paired leaves are broadly heart-shaped and bronze-tinted when young, and turning yellow, orange and pink in autumn, when they smell amazingly of burnt sugar.
