omg i want to talk to you about this more!!!! it sounds like this is a client choice pantry (set up so people can choose what they want, yeah?) that's the best kind of pantry! i have a lot of opinions about the best way food pantries run from my food bank days and like nowhere to put these opinions, lol
kind of! so we have all these rules and some of them are from the USDA, which we have to follow or we’ll lose assistance from the state agency, while some appear to be our own -- I don’t know which are which.
we have three main shelving units stocked with a variety of canned, bagged, and boxed goods. I did a lot of single people so I’ll use that as an example. a single person can get four different items from each shelf; they do have to be different, but not wildly so -- for instance, I mentioned that you can’t get two cans of green beans, but you can get a can of green beans and a can of corn. on the other hand, you can’t get two different cereals. some things count as two for one or four for one.
we had a few toiletries, a bunch of breakfast sandwiches and pretzels and stuff from WaWa, and day-old bread. some items are marked as only for families of a certain size or above, and if someone has a really big family we might have meat in the back we can give them. we also have stuff like Glucerna and diapers/formula available on request.
the different-item requirement caused a little confusion -- not as in “I don’t understand the rules,” but as in “geez, I really don’t want anything on this shelf but corn.” I figure that’s just them trying not to run out of any one thing when they don’t have much control over what comes in.
the clients pick out the stuff, and we pack the bags and make sure they don’t take too much/the wrong things, although the actual problem was getting them to take enough. bunch of people worried about taking something they might not end up wanting when someone else needed it more. god bless them
I’m really interested in seeing what people take. for instance, canned fruit was really popular and pasta sauce was not at all, which is the opposite of what I would’ve expected. lots to learn!

Stockinette rectangle, knitted on the bias with a provisional co and kitchenered together to make a loop, $5
LINEN STITCH????, $5
And no, of course I believe that pattern designers should be compensated, but these patterns took exactly no creativity or skill to design, and meanwhile hardworking, original pattern designers can’t charge more that $8 for a pattern–even charging $10 for a sweater is pretty rare, and enough to make most knitters think twice about buying it.
