do you have any advice for someone wanting to make music? I have no idea where to start but Ive always wanted to. congratulations on your new album!!
welllll firstly thank you. i hope its out soon cuz honestly i just want it off my itinerary. i appreciate you thinking of me
i never thought id be answering this question at this point in my career but thank you for trusting me. let me think... write everything down. like, take notes on absolutely everything because you will not remember those lyrics or that riff or whatever. make voice notes of something you get stuck in your head even if it feels dumb at the time because it really is that serious. god will give someone else your ideas XD
umm... push past the imposter syndrome. find what you like about your work and keep tweaking and refining and working until what you like about it starts to eclipse what you dont like.
the thing about art that ive noticed is that... while being technically impressive is certainly possible, almost no one ACTUALLY knows what theyre doing. people who grade music or production are functionally in a different profession than people who make music. critics are paid to give their ratings and often they are pre determined by the buyer. music journalism is paid for by the artist. all pr is an illusion. u know, actually, thats some advice right there. the sooner you figure out that everything you see out there is an illusion, the better. dont take failure so personal, because those rising to the top usually only have the money to stay afloat a little while. bubbles pop.
the only thing that really truly gets results in the longterm is earnesty and hard work and visibility. putting yourself out there over and over and over again gets you noticed even if it doesnt seem like it. again, dont take failure so personal because youre probably succeeding in tons of ways you dont even realize. never miss a shot to market but dont overmarket, if that makes sense. move with grace and charm and everything will fall into place in time.
errrm... thats all ive got. im honestly still figuring it out myself. if you have questions about the actual process of making music, like DAWs or gear or production or mixing, let me know! im always happy to answer.
