hey kids this idea needs some more nuance
Honestly I think the context here is most important:
If a non disabled person writes a character with disability who gets cured it's based on abelist ideology.
That isn't necessarily true for people who actually have disabilities.
Okay. But alsoāI donāt think we should require everyone who ever writes a disabled character to disclose their disability or lack thereof. Thatās medical history and itās private.
You can dislike tropes. Tropes can be problematic. Privileged folk of all walks of life need to learn to look inward and examine their biases. But also, we canāt require a full background check on every creative to make sure theyāre āallowedā to create their works.
TL;DRācreators need to examine their biases, step outside themselves and think about how other folk will interpret or experience your work. Simultaneously, consumers shouldnāt harass creators for being āproblematicā or demand that they prove they have a right to use that particular kind of problematic trope.
I know the internet doesnāt handle nuance well, but this is not a black and white issue. Try to engage with the shades of grey, Iām begging you.
