For me, I’m not upset about the death because BEV is a poc. I know Bryan isn’t pulling a racist move here. And I do believe he’s a feminist, judging from past actions/interviews.

My problem with Bev’s death is that in Season 1 he already “killed” Abigail, a woman, for shock value and put her in the “stuffed into a fridge” trope. Now, he’s killing Bev, another woman, for shock value and putting her in the “stuffed into a fridge” trope AS WELL. You can even argue that Miriam fits the trope from Jack’s pov (yes, I know the big spoiler, but it doesn’t change the shock value of finding her arm and the pain it caused Jack).

My problem isn’t that Bev is a poc who is being killed off or that she fits the trope. My problem is that Bryan Fuller has been repeatedly killing off women characters in Hannibal to fridge them. And you can’t say the same about the male characters. Sure, Bryan said that if he killed a woman this week, he’d kill a guy next week (Nerd HQ 2013). But so far, not a single guy character that we’ve grown attached to has died for shock value. Don’t tell me it’s because the number of guys that we care about is small once you factor out the leads, because he could’ve easily developed Chilton/Gideon/the other 2/3 of the sassy science team, before killing them, just like he did Beverly.

Yes, Beverly was going to die in Bryan’s mind. I just wished she died in a different, more respectful way.

ok so i've been thinking about what happened last ep and…

as unlikely as it is, i don't think they would kill beverly off. not right now, at least. beverly is necessary to the show because she's what grounds it, i think. she's what really connects us to the show, and she adds this lightness to it that the show needs. hannibal's so dark and morbid, if we didn't have beverly to soften things up it would just be too much, y'know? the show would become too one-toned. plus i think will's mental state would just go to shit. beverly's an anchor for him. need i remind everyone of what happened last season when beverly had jury duty?

plus she's one of the only people who take will seriously (or she was starting to, at least) and i feel like will needs her. the only other people who listens to him are hannibal (no) the new psychiatrist (who will would have to manipulate and even then, wouldn't be as reliable or capable as bev) and alana (who thus far hasn't had much agency and even if she did, she doesn't really believe will… she believes in him, but she thinks he's confused).

Also, if beverly died then it would seem like the show is systematically eliminating its female characters. abigail died at the end of last season, bedelia's removed herself from the situation, bella has cancer and has suicidal thoughts and tendencies so we know she's on her way out… which leaves beverly, freddie, and alana. freddie seems to be a minor character this season, only having one appearance thus far (i think) and alana's a flat character, whose whole life seems to center around will. the makers of hannibal have thus far seemed to be pretty conscious of the choices they make when writing, being careful to give proper representation to different groups. it seems to me that they would notice this trend in the show, and recognize that getting rid of beverly would rob the show of its last remaining dynamic female character. then again, that would mean they should've also noticed that alana's a fairly generic and flat female character but…

anyway yeah, i don't think they would kill beverly. i think hannibal would find some other way to tie her up like he did will. maybe framing and blackmail. hannibal's been paying attention to beverly for the last couple of episodes now, he knew she was on his tail. with as smart and manipulative as he is, i wouldn't be surprised if he's already got a whole string of contingency plans set up for her. then again, he would also have to judge beverly's willingness to be manipulated by him. he can't just lock her up like he did will, because then there would be two people accusing hannibal of murder, which would draw more attention to him. 

honestly, i'm just really really really hoping beverly's alive because i love her.

Next week on Hannibal...

Hannibal hosts a dinner party. The guests ask what type of food they are being served. Hannibal smiles, and says, "It's JAPANESE."
