kayiko: I actually saw the coffin a bit different. After being told he lost, he realized what he lost..was Molly. So he slowly takes the lid and places it over the coffin as symbolism that their special relationship is now gone. Molly is now gone from his life. He's lost her. He gasps as he realises this. Then snaps as he refuses to accept it and breaks up the coffin. Saying no over and over. He doesn't want to not have her in his life. He loves her in his own special way.
I do not agree, simply because Sherlock knows her, when he asked If I wasn't everything you think I am, everything that I think I am... would you still want to help me? and her answer was What do you need? So he knows that despite his faults and his errors she’s still by his side. And we know he has not lost her because she showed up at Baker Street with a big smile on her face, which means that they made peace with what happened and have moved on. What Sherlock has lost is not Molly, but his ability to ignore that her feelings are that strong, and that his own are too. That this is real, and her very existence sends him out of control as much as the idea of her death. She’s just slipped under his skin while he wasn’t paying attention because he considered her harmless for his emotional stability and he’s found out the truth (he preferred to ignore) in the most violent way.
