For a certified GENIUS, Chen sometimes really happens to be areal IDIOT and usually, Sherry knows this and thus she has long given up to stophim when he rambles on and on. Actually, in her opinion, Chen only rambles whenhe is stressed – and right now, he better be stressed or she will personally makesure that he will be.
“Don’t panic! Airliners basically land themselves!” he says.
And Sherrywants to LAUGH.
She doesnot know how to FLY a plane but she knows, technically, how to BUILD one and sheis nearly entirely sure that they do not land by themselves. They need a pilot andtheir pilot is DOWN and everything is a DISASTER and now she is rambling, too, whichmeans that she is freaking out, too.Which isbad with a capital B because, statistically speaking, nothing good has ever followedwhen she and Chen have freaked at the same time.
(Mostly because the freakout hasalways been completely justified.)
There isnot much space for rational thought inside her head, not with the way her heartslams against her ribcage in a desperate attempt to get away, but she KNOWS thatif they want to get out of this mess, they need to wake up someone who can pilota plane. Only thattheir options are limited because Agent Milkovich has a bleeding gash on her foreheadand Agent Fullbuster looks like he has a broken arm – she is not Chen, she cannotconfirm this.
There isa tiny chance that they have to land the plane themselves and Sherry is NOT happyabout this because aside from some hours at the simulator for fun, she has no experienceat all. She can radio HQ and PRAY that someone down there has an idea but she doesnot have to look to know that the autopilot has been fried by a stray ICER bullet.
(And theregoes what would have been her preferred method; Meredy SOMEHOW hacking her way intothe plane’s autopilot and an experienced pilot on the ground taking care of therest.)
And her hands start to tremble again and she grasps thehem of her shirt and clings to it like an infant would cling to its favourite blanketbecause this CANNOT be happening to her now. Her body cannot betray her like this, not now, not when she has to think her way through the blockade in her head.
(Karma really is a bitch sometimes, Sherry decides.)
This isthe worst timing for any of this but she knows why her fear is kicking in, numbingher already messed up brain. She knows the feeling of FALLING into uncertainty all too well andshe REMEMBERS what has happened the last time this has happened: she has ended ina box on the bottom of the ocean with her cousin and the hardest decision of herLIFETIME at her hands.
She does not want to go there again.
She knows that if she ever gets into such a situation again, she will choose the selfless solution again – but this time, she will make surethat she does not get dragged out of it, her arm DESTROYED and RUINED and entirelyUSELESS and her brain NUMBED and SLOWED and WORTHLESS. She doesnot want to die but she does not want to live half a life either. And without herbrain and her right arm, she is only half the woman she KNOWS she can be, the womanshe HAS to be if she wants to get everyone else out alive.
She isno protector by nature.
Others are this, she is a SURVIVOR. But she is still bearingthe wounds of the last fall and she is out of tricks. There is no old-fashioned,outdated little gadget in her hand this time, she does not have one last ace upher sleeve. She is a scarred woman, a burned child and she is AFRAID. She canadmit this. She does not panic because this would take up too muchenergy. She cannot afford this now but she can afford some good old fear.
Because it is okay to be afraid.
Agent Milkovich herself said so.
And Sherry wants to trustthe other woman because they are on the same TEAM.
“I don’tpanic,” she says and it feels like a lie on her lips although she is not lying, although she is telling him the truth.
‘I am notthe same.’ ‘You are not broken, Blendy, you are just changed.’
Sometimes, being broken and being changed feels the same. Other times, she still feels thespark inside her brain – the old brilliance. On these days, she wants to BELIEVEeveryone when they say that she only needs time and that this will help her copewith the loss of what has made her SPECIAL, of what has made her a VALUABLE memberof the team once.
But today, the spark she feels is strong, is big enough to IGNITE the fire inside her brain, the fire she has been missing for weeks and months and nearly a year now. She isnot healed because she cannot be healed from what has been done to her.
She is not broken, just changed. And finally, her handsstops trembling. She can do this. She knows how to build a plane, she knows howthey work on a deeper level than most pilots. And while she doubts that she canbring it to the ground, she knows that she can keep it in the air until Chen getsone of the actual pilots back to their feet.
This is not a moment for science.
This is a moment for FAITH.
