Çalıklı is very close to the Greek border. In the Ottoman empire it was part of the kaza of Doyran. According to the "Ethnographie des Vilayets d'Andrinople, de Monastir et de Salonique" (1878) book, 60 Muslim families (133 people) lived in the village. According to Vasil Kanchov in 1900, the village was populated by 260 Turks. According to Macedonian census of 2002, 358 people live in Çalıklı.
Engagement ceremonies in the region are usually with a meal. Alva, fasil (bean), and meat soup are served. This is called “engagement dinner”. Meal expenses belong to the girls.
Meals are usually served on the floor table, one of these tables is special, they call it the “kayınna” mother-in-law table. Before the she sits for eating, she puts money on the table. Whoever set (prepared) that table, the money left by the mother-in-law will be left to them.
Someone secretly steals and hides things like spoons and forks from the mother-in-law's table. The reason for this is that when the bride goes to her new house, the bride can eat from these stolen spoons and forks."
