Not agreeing one way or the other, but it is important to know the charges were dropped and settled and he hasn’t been accused of anything since. Even if what happened is true, he seemed to have turned his life around and changed for the better. People can make mistakes no matter how big and still change.

Your last sentence is also true. Context and patterns of behavior also matter immensely. Beyond whatever the Kobe situation may have been (which I still have zero info on so I’m not talking specifically about that), the notion that someone can say or do something dumb ten years ago and have it ruin their life ten years later with zero regard of what happened in between is fucking insane to me. Even if it happened a year ago or a week ago, people need to be given the room to learn and grow or else what is even the fucking point? People change in as little as a minute. Humans evolve and grow. It’s the whole point of being alive.

At one point Obama made it very clear what his stance was on marriage equality. He didn’t support it. Are you going to tell me that’s his stance now? He educated himself and his opinion changed. Or should we call him a homophobe? Do we really think he’s faking it? Just because he didn’t support it at one point he doesn’t support it forever? Do we really think Ashley hasn’t learned since that dumb trans tweet she made when she was like 14? Do we actually think they Joy Reid of 2019 agreed with those blog posts that surfaced from like 10-15 years ago? Y’all don’t give people leeway to change so why would anyone be encouraged to? If they’re always going to be “cancelled” for who they were or what they thought at one point then people have no reason to change. It’s the reason why cancel culture is bullshit.

Why do people forget about Kobe’s rape charges...

1) I don’t follow sports. I know nothing about this. Never heard about it before.

2) Y’all know that I’m very much of the “art is not the artist” position and I think the same applies here. One thing doesn’t cancel the other. I know jack shit about sports and even I know Kobe was a legend and set records across the league in his tenure. Again, I literally know nothing about these accusations but even *IF* what he was accused of is true...that doesn’t take his skill away. People can at least celebrate that part and I think they should be allowed to. Life is a lot less black and white than current cancel culture might lead you to believe. Even if people weren’t mourning the man, they should be allowed to mourn one of the greatest athletes we’ve ever seen.

Same shit happens in music, film, and art. Woody needs to take a long walk off a short bridge...he still made at least one masterpiece. Cosby is a sentient turd who deserves to die in jail...you also can’t deny he was a transcendental comedian who paved the way for other black comedians in the industry. I would celebrate if Harvey was burned alive one day...but I will also admit that in the decades he was running the industry he was singlehandedly responsible for starting the career of many female directors + played a huge part in revitalizing indie cinema + produced some of the greatest movies ever made, movies which wouldn’t have been made without him backing them because they were not “commercial” enough. I could keep going but you get the point.

You can admit someone is a horrible person who did bad shit, you can agree that someone should never work in their field again just to keep those around them safe, and you can also acknowledge that they were incredible in their profession. Doing both is not impossible.
