This serene centaur archer resides in the Feywild — but unlike the typical chaos of that realm, she and her clan live mindfully, grounded in stillness and contemplation. I loved the contrast in her concept: a Vulcan-like calm in a world of whimsy.

In this portrait, she’s just loosed an arrow, prancing through a quiet creek, the golden light of summer warming the water. She’s smiling — not in victory, but in play. A moment of peace, caught mid-motion.

Daenerys Targaryen, Stormborn, the Unburnt, Khaleesi of the great grass sea, breaker of shackles, mother of dragons, queen of Meereen, queen of the Andals, and the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the realm.

There is so much to say about Daenerys. She's the rightful heir to a kingdom she's never seen, she disrupts the lynch pin of her worlds slave trade, she's a widow, she's 17, she loves her dragons, she has to lock them in a pit.

full disclosure before I go into headcannons that inspired this, I have not finished A Dance with Dragons. I'm about halfway through, and have finished the show.

Martin has spent so much of the books, and in particular Daenerys' sections, building out the details of this massive world, much of which was ruled by the Valyrian empire. I don't think that Daenerys will abandon her seat in Meereen for Westeros, or her Khalasar. She is the Stalion who Will Mount the World. The central head of a new Valyrian empire.

I'm sure that after she stabilizes slavers bay, she'll make her way to Westeros, and she might have some conflict with her nephew Aegon, but if Rhaegar was right, and the dragon needs three heads, than Aegon, Jon, and Daenerys will have to come together to fight off the long night.

Once I've finished a Dance with Dragons, I'll probably come back with all three surviving Targaryens to talk about the Prince that was Promised.

Under Flowers

For this small acrylic painting, I felt inspired by Tobias Kwan's surreal work; where he uses quite abstract marks and decorative elements, my flowers felt more concrete somehow (even though they are just blobs). I wanted to try rubber stamps to suggest more detail than painted - on the Yupo paper this was painted on, the result isn't that impressive because the paint gets this smudgy texture. Might be better on paper. Because the synthetic paper gives up the paint without hesitation, I had to cover it all in transparent gesso before using coloured pencils for details. "Under Flowers", A4, acrylics and ink on Yupo paper.
