How early is too early to start training to be SDit? My border collie is 10 wks old and he's really smart and knows how to sit, stay, and lay down but is still potty training.
I’m by no means a training expert, but in my opinion, it’s never too early. As long as neither you nor your pup ate getting burnt out, train away! Some things obviously need to wait, like mobility training. If you’re planning on that, the dog needs to be at least 2 years old, and be evaluated and cleared by a vet.
Stay away from public access until your dog has had all of his puppy vaccinations, you don’t want him getting sick! And for now, I would stick to only pet-friendly locations, especially because he’s still being potty trained. Personally I would wait until 6 months before taking him to non pet-friendly locations- I’m not sure what others opinions on that are though. I didn’t get Arlo as a young puppy, I got him around 8 months old, and started him on public access around 9 months, once we had a more established relationship and I was confident he wouldn’t have an accident, or cause too much commotion. Also, be sure to check your state laws to see if SDiTs are covered where you live!
