Text Criticism
10. Social Context: Around 1185, Andreas Capellanus wrote The Art of Courtly Love. In this influential work, Capellanus states, “Love makes an ugly and rude person shine with all beauty, knows how to endow with nobility even one of humble birth, can even lend humility to the proud.” In what ways does “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” reflect Capellanus’s understanding of love and its transforming power? ”
Andreas Capellanus writing implies that love essentially changes the person. Capellanus statement at first glance makes me think that loves makes someone change in a positive way. However, based on the “Wife of Bath’s Tale” love proves to be something that can change someone for the worse.
In the Wife of Bath’s tale, we have a knight that’s lonely and does an unspeakable crime because of it. From this standpoint, The Knight’s craving for love and lust changed him into a criminal.
Later on in the tale, there is an old woman that falls in love with the knight, sadly the knight refuses to feel the same way because of her appearance, thus the Old women transforms herself to a beautiful woman that is just what the Knight was looking for all because of love. Good for the old woman to pursue her interest, However, I believe that when finding a significant other, you should find someone that loves you for you, not just for looks.
