TW: Death mention, the whole Alex plot bullshit, alcohol

Twenty-two days had passed since she died. Twenty-one days had passed since he last saw her smile. It didn’t feel like twenty-two days. Every time Alex closed his eyes he was back in the ballroom watching the life drain from his mother’s eyes. The alcohol didn’t seem to help.

It had been twenty days since Alexander Jackson had been home. Though the Jackson Mansion barely felt like his home anymore. It was a cold prison that taunted him with memories of his mother’s smile. Nineteen days were spent on some island that Alex couldn’t be bothered to remember the name of. Nineteen days were spent drinking and laying mindlessly on a beach as the sun bore down on his skin.

The cell phone he was once attached to had been left basically untouched, used only to purchase tickets to the island. The buzzing is what caused him to let it die.

Forty-four unread text messages from Katie greeted him when he finally brought himself to go back to Long Island. For the twenty-two days that he seemed to vanish into, a good-morning and a good-night text was sent. It was hard for him to admit that he’d forgotten about his girlfriend, but she was the last thing on his mind.

Guilt filled him almost immediately. He should have at least said he would be fine. But he didn’t. He didn’t even think about how she would worry. It was selfish.

‘hey k-bug. sorry ive been out of town. im coming home tonight. shrunken head at 9?’

Alex sent the text. He meant to tell her that he loved her, but that could wait for another day. His phone returned to its spot at the bottom of his bag as Alex sorted his affairs at the resort he was in. He didn’t even bother to check to see if Katie texted back.

The flight back was a cruel reminder of how he couldn’t use magic due to his age. But just like the last three weeks, the flight was a blur. 8:45 and Alex was home. He started the bottle of firewhiskey almost as soon as he stepped into the building. Glaring down at him from the high gallery was a cold reminder of everything he lost. The portrait had been commissioned when Alex was around eight, and the small family looked normal. Happy, even. He hated it.

A shower. That’s what he needed. The stench of liquor oozed from his pores, and he at least wanted to try to be socially acceptable for Kate.

The water burned his skin as he scrubbed the grime that covered him. He hadn’t showered on the island; his hair was caked with sand. He exited the small stall bright red. It was 9:15, and Alex was late.

By the time he was dressed and standing in front of the fireplace with a fist full of floo powder, the bottle of firewhiskey was half empty and it was 9:25.

“Shrunken Head in Elkhorn.” Alex made sure to enunciate his words as he stepped into the green flames. And then he was transported, and sitting at their usual table, alone, was Katie. He was really late. He was sure he smelled, his hair was still wet, and he was drunk.

Yes, it was, like, a week and a half til graduation. And yes, Katie was the last of the Davenport siblings to find out even though Leslie had originally planned on telling her first...but Leslie needed to get this off her chest. With Katie, she would be all out. Literally.

“Hey, thanks for meeting me. I didn’t want to go to the school and I knew you had your last Elkhorn weekend coming up.”

Les smiled at Katie, unable to help the fact that her eyes were perhaps a little mistier than usual. “Katie, I’m so happy for you. You look so cute in your cap and gown.”

Les took the teabag out of her travel mug once she was finally satisfied with how strong it was. With a quick goodbye to Grant, she apparated to where Katie was staying. “Hey, Katie. Open the door.” She knocked, waiting for her sister to answer.

“So Ellie moved back to England. And I started online dating. It’s horrible.”
