TWO OF US SPENDING SOMEONE’S HARD-EARNED PAY, no. 6. Louis Prima/Keely Smith, The Hits of Louis & Keely. “I got it good and that ain’t bad,” Louis tucks in as an aside and gets a laugh from an audience as his wife tries to sing the song the right way on “I Got It Bad and That Ain’t Good.” He’s almost got the Bob Wills thing where he’s so used to audiences eating up his live-show ad-libs that he commits them to recordings where they’re permanent, now, which is sometimes a little odd, but lovable. Actually I think that one was live—premeditated? Maybe, probably. This sounds so good! They’re just so entertaining, and Louis kind of won’t give up until you love him. And the band is killer, so tight. The almost digital precision of the pianoist’s right hand on “Just a Gigolo” which you can probably bring to your ear’s memory right now. I bet Louis didn’t like band guys who made mistakes. But it sure is fun.
