CARING FOR STUBBORN MUSES STARTERS : accepting. @keenesthound asked “listen, i know you don’t want to, but.. maybe you should rest for a while.” to Joseph
At this point, the fight clubs practically ran themselves. That’s right— clubs. Plural. He and Tyler had been wordlessly led from spot to spot the other night by a few eager members, three clubs taking up residence around town. It seemed that Lou’s basement just hadn’t been big enough for every guy looking to find their shiny new center of gravity.
Guys had started moving into Paper Street, men with buzzcuts and black shirts and when Tyler barked orders at them, they fell in line right at his heels. And since Joe followed him around like a stray mutt, they trailed right after him, too. Nobody tried to question his rank or importance. Hell, they took Joe’s word just as soon as they took Tyler’s. He was at the helm of something big. Bigger than he wanted to admit, judging by the tabloids.
Sleep wasn’t at the top of his to-do list. He hadn’t noticed it right away, but the insomnia was back again. Full force.
So here he was with Will, having breakfast for dinner in some diner because he just rea11y had a hankering for bacon that he couldn’t get out of his system. Not sure why. Didn’t care to question it much.
He’d been staring off into the empty space to his left, into the aisle of the empty diner half-run by members of Fight Club #1. Or was it #3? Will’s words finally caught up to him.
“ Rest? ” Joseph shook his head, thinking he was doing it quickly but in reality actually moving a little slow. “ No. No, if I let my guard down now, everything will just—“ he mimed something massive falling down with his hands, his fork in his right hand.
His right hand? He’s left-handed. Confusion evident across his features, Joe switched his fork over to his other hand.
“ Listen, man, ” he said, holding his hands up to gesture again—in a placating way this time— “ I get what you’re saying. And...thank you, I know I look like shit, but there’s so much shit I have to do. Did you know— “ he leaned forward, bending over the table, maybe too much, maybe he was being weird, “ that the scent of lavender deters mice? And flies, and mosquitoes, and loads of other pests? People say it helps put them to sleep, but it just makes me fee1 weird. ”
He paused and tried to meet Will’s gaze. “ ...I say that because—they’re growing lavender out in the back of my house, now. For the soap... ”
