Scarlet Bugler (Penstemon centranthifolius) is a hummingbird favorite. This very drought tolerant perrenial sends up a large (2-4ft) spike of red flowers, lasting from April - July in its native range (Southern California and Northern Baja California). If you live in adjacent desert regions, this can also work in a rock garden. In the garden - Nevin’s Barberry (Berberis nevinii) in bloom. Native to the inland valleys of Southern California, the Nevin’s Barberry is listed as endangered. It is threaten by, what else, habitat lose and urban development.

This California quail is nearing with his mate outside of my parents house in Napa Valley. Last year, quail had 12 babies there and their neighbor's cat killed every last one. Once plentiful, the main causes of the birds' decline include habitat destruction and feral cats.
