My process which I call, “cocooning” (obsessive stitching) was derived from a childhood memory of the massive infestation of Tent Caterpillars. I remember witnessing their complex cocoons that devoured the trees in our yard - attaching themselves to protect their families and suffocate the branch from which they made their home. Throughout my life, this memory resurfaced every season. Although, the level of infestation isn’t as grand as it was when I was a child, they still catch my eye as I drive down the windy roads from where I now live. I began to think about that idea of protecting and holding onto something so precious that I’m nearly suffocating it in the process. Being the “Collector, Protector, Keeper” of my family’s heirlooms and memories, it became a natural progression to incorporate the cocoon into my art. As the years passed, I went from cocooning miniature objects that were representations of actual pieces in my home, my family’s heirlooms or “DNA”, to cocooning miniature porcelain doll heads after the recent loss of my father. No matter what object is being cocooned, the meaning stays the same - protect and attempt to control the decay of my family’s memory.
