   They had made camp before nightfall, exhausted from the day, and Griffin had assigned himself the first and only ‘watch’ as he often did. He never slept much. When he did, the smallest sound had him bolting upright. “Survival instincts dialed to eleven” his father had called it. Griffin didn’t know what a ‘dial’ was but it had kept him and his young companions alive all this time. He couldn’t afford to relax now.

   There were still a few hours before night truly settled. Griffin could feel the heat of the sun on his back. But that wasn’t what had him reaching for his knife and stepping away from the shelter of their camp. Something was approaching. Griffin could hear them; light footsteps, not dragging like the dead but placed with purpose as they moved forward. As far as he could tell, there was only one set of footsteps, and they were coming right for them. With a quick steadying breath, Griffin stepped into their path.

   “You should turn back.” His voice was clear and calm, just loud enough to wake his friends. He needed to give them enough time to flee. “I don’t want any trouble.”

   When he had learned that Rosita was in the infirmary, Alex quite nearly dropped everything to be at her side. His tasks set out for the evening were left abandoned; his fishing gear remained set out on his room’s floor, only half organized, and recently washed clothes were left damp in a wicker basket instead of hung out to dry. Ronan, however, was the one duty Alex could never and wouldn’t ever abandon, but even tucking his son into bed was done with haste, foregoing the night’s usual bedtime story with a promise to make up for it with two stories the following night.

   Having claimed a chair by the foot of Rosita’s bed, Alex was careful to stay out of Siddiq’s way as he worked, drawing a leg up to loop an arm around his knee and lower his head. When dusk stole color from the room and gray shadows darkened until only moonlight kept them at bay, Alex lit a lantern and set it on the bedside table. The motion caused her to stir. Alex returned to his chair and waited until her eyes focused on him before speaking. “Last time we were here, I was the one unconscious in a bed. You made sure I wasn’t alone. I hoped to return the favor.”

      “Come  on  now,  I  hate  it  when  people  stare  like  that.  If  I  say  I’m  fine  then  it  means  I’m  goddamn  fine.”  The  cough  that  wracks  through  his  chest  says  other,  but  he  takes  a  swig  from  the  canteen  close  by  to  douse  the  flames  its  causing  in  is  throat.  “Ain’t  you  got  some  work  t’  be  doin’  instead  of  hoverin’  over  me  like  some  kinda  mother  hen?”  Now  he’s  being  difficult,  but  he  doesn’t  care.  He’s  tired  and  he  KNOWS  he’s  dying.  With  everything  going  on  with  Dutch  and  Micah,  he  doesn’t  have  time  to  worry  about  anything  else.

             He had to let the rage out before it consumed him. One by one, every walking corpse that crossed his path was put down brutally. And with each swing of his ax, a heartbroken cry would leave his chest. His son was dead and their home, burned to ashes. The leader was so deep in dark thoughts he didn’t see the woman observing him from a distance.
