Kushina smiled, placing a gentle hand on the younger Kunoichi’s shoulder; taking the indigo hair by surprise. There had been a reason that she requested to have the eldest Hyuga daughter join her on this mission; and after explaining exactly why to her husband, the Fourth Hokage, happily agreed. The red hair was no fool, even the blind man that tried to sell old, rusted ninja weapons to passing shinobi on the street corners of Konoha could see how much Hinata cared for Naruto. In fact, it was obvious to everyone except her ever oblivious son who still mistakes Hinata’s fainting spells as her being ill and not simply overwhelmed by his mere presence.

A head of red hair tilted to the side, as smile crossing her features. Hinata had been able to prove something to her while out on this mission. Many within the village labeled her as weak, ready to give up when things got hard. Kushina wanted to dispel that rumour. And what better way to do so than to have her tag along on this A-rank, month long mission she had begged to be assigned to? “You did well, Hinata-chan.”

She could tell that those three simple words meant the world to the seventeen year old in front of her. It was no secret that she was always looked down on, so to be praised like that must have melted her heart. “You’re not the weak girl that everyone seems to think that you are, ‘ttebane. You proved that over and over again in this past month. So I want you to make me a promise; I want you to promise me that no matter what anyone says, what anyone does, you won’t look at yourself as weak. Because you are anything but.”

Kushina laughed, wrapping her arms around her son as he showered her with kisses. “What’s this all about, is it my birthday? You’re not nearly this affectionate most of the time.”

Kushina glanced up from the scroll she was reading when she felt something plop in her lap. A gentle smile curved her lips as she looked down at the little ball of blonde and orange that lay there. He looked exhausted, it must have been hard being a small child.

Placing her scroll to the side, she placed a loving hand on her son’s head. It would be time for a nap soon, and she was quite certain this time around he wouldn’t make a fuss about being put down to sleep. “Did you have fun today, Naruto?”

The first time they kissed, it had been an accident. It was when they were but nine years old. Kushina had just arrived to the village and the first day at the academy hadn’t gone as she had originally hoped. So when the final bell chimed that day and everyone had been released to go home, she leisurely made her way out of the school building, only to be pushed by one of the bullies whom had picked on her throughout the day. This caused her to trip and fall into the arms of a very stunned, young Minato Namikaze who stared at her wide eyed as their lips touched. She was too embarrassed to even look in his direction for the next month.

The second time they kissed had been completely innocent. It was a gesture of thanks in her mind. After all, she had seen her mother do this to her father many times when he had been of assistance so in her young eleven year old mind, her actions were completely justified. Minato had helped her get home when she fell and scrapped her knee on a jagged rock. Training in rain around sharp, pointy things that stuck out of the ground wasn’t the most brilliant idea she had ever had. But it made her realize that maybe, just maybe, there actually was someone in the village that she could possibly become friends with.

The third time they kissed had been after he had saved her from abduction by single handily defeating those ninja that had broken into her home. He had complimented her hair, stating that it was a beautiful, vibrant colour amongst a sea of common hair tints. Her cheeks had become hot, and she thought that they could have possibly rivaled the colour of her hair at that moment. But she had pushed that thought away when she craned her neck forward and pecked his cheek. She was certain she had found her soulmate.

The fourth time they kissed was on their wedding day. It had been such a joyous occasion in Kushina’s life. Despite her status as a jinchuriki, she had found someone that loved her for her. Someone that had put himself at risk to save her life when he could have easily looked the other way. The only man that had ever complimented her red hair she had once hated so much. A man who, against all odds, was animate about standing by her side for the rest of their lives, no matter what happened, no matter how many times she tried to dissuade him. And she was, for the first time since learning why she had been brought to the Hidden Leaf, genuinely happy.

The fifth time they kissed was when she announced that she was pregnant. She had been so happy and she could tell that he was over the moon from his stunned expression and the repetition of the phrase, “I’m going to be a father”. It scared her a little, Mito-sama had told her how difficult her delivery had been since she had previously been the Kyuubi’s jinchuriki before Kushina. But with Minato assuring her that everything would be fine because he wouldn’t leave her side, she couldn’t help the excitement that continued to bubble in the pit of her stomach.

Kushina didn’t believe a word of that. Even with just passing glances over her son’s frame, she could see the extent of the damage he sustained. She had also been informed by Tsunade that if he had been brought in even a few seconds later than he had been, he likely wouldn’t have made it despite the Kyuubi’s rapid healing abilities.

A fist clenched tightly around the fabric of her pants. She hated seeing her baby boy hurting like this. And even if he didn’t tell her himself who was responsible, she would find out. And she. Would. Make. Them. Pay. No one, and she meant absolutely no one would get away with putting their hands on her son and living to tell about it so long as the Red Hot Habanero of the Leaf was around.

“Naruto,” Kushina spoke as calmly as possible, “Tell me who did this to you. Because so help me if you don’t and I have to find out from someone else...” She didn’t have to finish the rest of her sentence. She could tell from the way that the young blonde tensed up in his bed that he knew she meant business. “I’ll ask one more time. Who did this to you? And don’t you dare fix your mouth to lie to me again.”
