Craig was about to disagree to the other smoking. Honestly the smell of tobacco and smoke sickened Craig. It was bad enough his daughters hung out with a guy who vapes, but now this.
Clearing his throat, Craig just rose an eyebrow at the other. “Well bro, I don’t have any vices to worry about. My behavior is fine and healthy and does no harm.” Craig spoke with a huff in his voice, as if he was tired of explaining to people that he wasn’t hurting himself with exercise.
He was in denial.
“Kid, you listening? I said they don’t always look like mine, and mine, if you haven’t noticed—” he pointed at Craig with the Marlboro. “—are the self-destructive kind.”
He tucked the cigarette behind his ear for safekeeping. He’s in quite the chatty mood. “Vices, in my idea of them, is overindulging in something to keep your mind off other things. And me, well, I subscribe to some aggressive ones for my own reasons. Other people?” He counted off on his fingers. “Work. Games. Major League... Religion. Those do the trick just fine.”
“And with none of the killing you slowly.” He smiled, all teeth. Knives weren’t the only things that were sharp. “We all have things we don’t wanna think about, and we all do as much as we can to distract ourselves. Some of us are just more honest with ourselves about it.”
