Keirokai in San Mateo November 10, 2013 The Gail Project traveled to San Mateo to celebrate the elderly Okinawan community in the Bay Area. (As a point of reference, elderly for Okinawans is 80+ years old!) The day began with traditional forms of dance, followed by martial arts performances, classical singing, and sanshin (traditional Okinawan string instrument), wrapping up with a lively taiko performance. The group got the opportunity to advertise the project, pass out our fresh-off-the-press postcards, and join in a traditional dance! (see the last photo, in which Alan shows off his tremendous skills) Ultimately, we were successful in forming connections and immersing ourselves in Okinawan culture. - Simon, Conner & Madeline
