“Riddle of Steel” Keith Davis 2013
The Thing (1982) dir. John Carpenter
You know, Shingeki no Kyojin has this one scene where Commander Keith and Eren discuss whether or not Eren is ‘special’, then flashing through Keith’s memories of what Carla said about Eren in that regard:
[ Is it wrong not to be special? I don’t think that way. When it comes to my child it’s fine if he’s never great. He doesn’t have to be better than anyone. After all, just look at him! He’s already this cute. That is why he’s already special. Because he was born into this world. ]
This is it. This is the point of being a parent. This is how all parents should behave. This is what it means to parent a child.
It’s not the expectations you place on them be it or not for the sake of protecting your image or because you failed and are projecting yourself onto them, but rather the sense of being ready to accept your child, regardless. Because the sole fact they have come to this world [that is] full of difficulties, fragility, grief and yet condensed with beauty and kindness at the same time is the real blessing, the real miracle and what a parent should be grateful for.
SO many people become parents out of peer pressure. Or because they have an idolized image of their children in their mind. Or because they underestimate it , only to regret it later on. Only to keep the lineage alive. Only out of a sense of duty. And then they ask of them the most ridiculous things, thus perpetuating the cycle of regret, grief, shame, sorrow and even abuse. Because these are all taught. You should never have a child thinking ‘ I want one ‘ just because. Ask yourself instead ‘ do I deserve a child? do i deserve and am ready enough to raise a child? Am I mature enough to not let my weaknesses ruin the experience for both me and the child? Do I actually want the child? Do I understand what having a child actually entails on the long run? ‘
I see so many people who have no idea what they signed up for when they have children. Or they did and are taking advantage of the children due to it. Yes, no family is perfect, humans are flawed but it is still not an excuse for you to rid yourself of the mess you caused on another innocent human being that is solely dependent on you for their survival. Which is why I have made a vow to myself that if I ever become a mother someday I will be proud of my child regardless of whether they have good or bad grades, are the prettiest child or not, are a successful worker with a good car(s)/house(s) or not. Just the fact that they have come to the world is for me more than enough to make them special.
Judge grants new trial for Keith Davis Jr., controversial police shooting victim who was convicted of murder
In June of 2015, Baltimore police chased 26-year-old African-American Keith Davis, Jr. into a dim parking garage and shot at him 44 times. They struck him three times, including once in the face, leaving him unconscious. Miraculously, though, “Davis survived, a bullet still visibly lodged in his neck.”
The police were chasing Davis because they saw him in the vicinity after a cab driver told them that an African-American male with a silver-colored gun had just tried to rob him and then fled. He described the robber as wearing shorts, a short-sleeve shirt, and plaited hair. He also said the robber was holding the gun in his right hand, but he didn’t notice any tattoos. Davis was wearing long blue jeans and a tank top, with short-cropped hair and his arms covered in tattoos. But he was a nearby African-American male, which was enough for the police to pursue him and start shooting.
Police later reported finding a gun on top of a refrigerator in the garage, behind which Davis had taken cover. The gun was green and multicolor, not silver, but it was sufficient evidence for police to charge Davis with “16 criminal counts, including attempted robbery, assault, gun possession, and discharge of a firearm.” Davis consistently maintained his innocence, denying the gun was his. The gun did contain a partial palm print from Davis, but--as Davis pointed out--he was unconscious, so the police had both the opportunity and every motive to frame him by putting the gun in his hand and then planting it to try to justify their shooting an innocent man.
Investigation revealed that the gun was unloaded anyway, and confirmed that the police had fired all shots. In court, the cab driver confirmed that Davis wasn’t the man who tried to rob him: “To my recollection that don’t look like him to me.” The jury acquitted Davis of all charges except one the prosecutors had added a few weeks before trial: firearm possession with a felony conviction. (Oddly, the jury acquitted Davis of carrying or wearing a gun, but somehow decided to convict him of possessing the gun anyway.)
A few days later, in March of 2016, the police charged Davis with first-degree murder, because the gun they found in the garage had been linked to a homicide committed about five hours earlier that day. Well, that explains the last-minute addition of the possession charge.
