Osama Bin Laden dead, Looks like Twitter broke the story. Is Twitter the new news source?
First, let me say unabashadly, I am so proud of this country and the troops and that this evil has been wiped from this earth. Our prayers should still be with the victims of 911 and the brave people who have lost their lives because of Bin Laden and his equally evil counterparts. I loved this. My Facebook has been blowing up in the minutes the story broke that Bin Laden has been sent to the eternal place. The fact I heard this before "conventional" news means, the tv and the radio. As soon as I saw this on Facebook, I turned to the televison news to hear and see the story. I find it interesting and fascinating that I heard this through a social media tool before I turned on the TV. I immediately went to my breaking news sites and I find it was on Twitter first that actually broke the story.
Keith Urbahn, chief of staff for the office of the former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, appears to be the first to break the news on Twitter that Osama bin Laden, the man responsible for the attacks of September 11, 2001, is dead. Urbahn is tweeting what he's found out from his sources.
While the networks were scrambling to get the story, Twitter said it first. More and more, Twitter is being used to break stories, send help, make people aware of situations and I have been a fan of this social media tool for a while. Will more people and will more news sources use this tool to break stories? This was an amazing use of social media. Follow Keith Urbahn on Twitter.
I'm not going to dwell too much on this, the nation is celebrating, a weight and closure has happened for this country. I am glad that in an industry I have embraced after being in the "convetional" media for 20 years, that one of my tools I use showed its use. I am tired of having to explain what good is Twitter. Folks, this is why.
