Keith Jarrett ~ The Köln Concert ~ 1/24/75
Seventeen year old promoter Vera Brandes brought Keith Jarrett to Germany to perform a fully improvised solo piano concert for what would be the first-ever jazz concert at the Cologne Opera House. Jarrett was in pain from back problems, had not slept well the previous few nights, was exhausted from a long drive from Zürich, and to top it all off the wrong piano had been brought in and there was no way to get a replacement before the concert was scheduled to begin. The piano was a practice piano with pedals that barely worked and a tinny upper register and a weak bass register. Though the performance was sold out, Jarrett, a particularly fastidious performer, (he has been known to give the audience cough drops before performances to ensure there are no interruptions) refused to play and was sitting in his car waiting for his driver when Vera, crying and standing out in the rain, begged him to perform. “Never forget ... only for you,” Jarrett said. Thus the best-selling solo album and all-time best-selling piano album in jazz history was born.
