Once dinner was over, Kellan caught Edmund’s eye and beckoned him to follow. They slipped away to a spot under a beautiful tree at the back of their land. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the world around them was bathed in a warm golden glow. The nearby road was empty, creating a serene backdrop for their secluded moment. It felt as if time had paused. Edmund found himself admiring Kellan's features in the golden light.
Kellan turned to Edmund, suddenly looking very nervous. “I have a question,” Kellan said.
Edmund nodded, giving him a silent go-ahead.
Kellan got down on one knee, taking Edmund’s hand in his. The world faded away to background noise and warn sunlight.
“Edmund, I want to marry you,” Kellan said, his voice shaking a bit. “And before you say anything—because I can see the your mind moving a million miles a minute—you just need to let me finish. I know we can’t marry legally, not in this world we live in. But I want us to be married in our hearts and in a way that only we know. I want to make a promise to be dedicated to you, now and forever.”
Edmund’s heart raced as he processed Kellan’s words. He could barely believe that this was happening. Kellan had never given any sign before this.
Kellan continued, less anxious than he was before. “You are my home, Edmund. You’ve always been the one I turn to, my support in the best and worst of times. I want something tangible to remember this. Something that symbolizes what we mean to each other. I want to build a life together, even if it's not legally the same as the others. Let me show you that I will be in love with you, will be there for you no matter what, until the day I die. So Edmund, will you marry me?"
The enthusiastic yes was the easiest and fastest decision that Edmund had ever made.
