Name analysis:
Kelpjay
Kelp
An uncommon prefix that is of course tied to the sea, though rarely used by other clans before Saltclan began its tied with its culinary use. As a prefix it’s associated with prosperity, growth, and health, kelp and seaweed being a sign of a healthy ocean. As both food and shelter for fish it can also lean into a protective and nurturing meaning- possibly even maternal. As a prefix it would suit a camp keeper or a nurse. On a less positive note, kelp as a food is…an acquired taste, not one that suits all palates. This leads to an association with finickiness and could be seen a cat that has few, but vocal, critics.
Jay
More common as a prefix, this name is surprisingly versatile and woefully under used. This name is initially seen as fun and playful. Blue jays are known for their beauty, protectiveness, and- less fondly- their hostile noise. It’s a name that would suit an artisan given the immediate image of blue feathers and song. Though it’s also been given to code keepers and mediators, specifically cats who are quick tongued and clever. Jays are quick and brutal when defending their nest, leading to an association with battle and camp protection. Leaning into its clever and playful meanings, the suffix would suit cats who’re more chatty than charming, tricksters who like to play pranks or joke around.
Kelpjay
An odd name, though not without its charm, one that certainly commands attention. There’s many ways to interpret this name, one could say this suits a protective, nurturing camp keeper with a sharp tongue. Or a strong willed and prosperous artisan. Negatively it could be a name suited for a cat…who isn’t suited for many. Kelp being an acquired taste and Jays being noisy, hostile birds could lead to the idea that this is a cat who isn’t widely popular but doesn’t seem bothered by it.
