will never forget this one day when I was still majoring in social work, a professor was giving scenarios about ethical dilemmas to test us on the sw code of ethics. one of the scenarios was something like:
"you work at a foundation that provides assistance to people with mental illnesses. one day, a new case worker starts, and you recognize her as one of your former clients who struggled with schizophrenia. she appears to be doing well and has since earned her degree."
there were around 15 people in this class. before I was called on a few minutes into the discussion, the whole class seemed to be in agreement that they should break patient confidentiality and tell their supervisor, because their colleague's schizophrenia was somehow dangerous to clients and would prevent her from doing her job.
obviously i was appalled and argued against that, as did the professor who very gently explained why they were so so so wrong. this was years ago, and was an 200 level undergraduate class and I would hope that my classmates graduated with a kinder view of people with psychosis. im still friends with some of them who work in mental health. but not every cohort is given that prompt, and asked to consider that "dilemma".
im not entirely sure what the point of telling this story was, maybe someone else can draw deeper meaning from it. i just think it's a good example of how the dehumanization of the severely mentally ill is so disgustingly fucking pervasive.
