i’m interested to hear the thoughts of other kemetics on disentangling the institution of kingship from the kemetic religion. to me—as a leftist & also just as a human being—the system of monarchy & the stratification of ancient egyptian society is inherently imbalanced, disharmonious, & predicated upon propaganda/falsehood, i.e., against ma’at. & yet (obviously) it was this society that created the very concept of ma’at, that defined the kingship & social order as upholding ma’at, that built a relationship with the gods through the (supposedly) divinely-ordained authority of the king.

richard h. wilkinson writes that “to a good degree egypt’s gods cannot be understood without reference to the egyptian institution of kingship… the institution was such an integral part of the egyptians’ view of their society that it was held to be as essential to divine society as the gods.” this quote just struck me & made me think... how do we go about surgically separating these things that were never meant to exist without one another? how do we as modern kemetics, as leftists, as human beings—reconcile the following of kemetic religion with the rejection of kingship? can we truly redefine ma’at for ourselves in that way? some may call it “cherry-picking.” i’d prefer to call it deconstruction (& reconstruction). i’d love to hear what other people think.
