あなたにとって目の前に広がる“景色”とは何でしょうか。

今回の展示では、この黒島地区の最も重要な景色の一つをモチーフにしていますが、そのものを意図しているわけではありません。この作品は、あなたにとってどのように見えるでしょうか？モチーフを用いた具象性のある作品として見るかもしれない。あなたは、反射する光の現象への印象を強く感じるかもしれない。金属面に映るこの場所やその変化に、もしくは物性そのものが目に入るかもしれない。

あなたにとっての景色とは？あなたにとってこの光景とは何か？を考えたいと思います。

個別の板が無数に吊られ構成された面は、周囲の空気の流れによって個体同士が連動し、それぞれに影響を与えながら揺れ動きます。そこから生まれたた光はこの場所に照らしたり、板そのものに周囲や他の板が捉えた光を映り出します。そして、この場所や、外部からの影響、人など様々な環境に呼応しながら変化します。それはまさに、わたしたちの生きる社会と同じく、それぞれの関わりがそれぞれに連動し連鎖しその場所をつくるのです。また、それを受け止めるあなたにも堆積された出来事があり、この光景は無数の“かたち”を秘めているのです。

What is the "Scenery" that unfolds before your eyes?

The motif of this exhibition is one of the most important landscapes of the "Kuroshima area", but it is not intended to be one. What does this work look like to you? You might see it as a figurative work with a motif. You might feel a strong impression of the phenomenon of reflected light. You might see this place and its changes in the reflection on the metal surface, or the physical properties themselves.

What is the sight for you? What is this sight for you? I would like to think about the following.

The surface, which is composed of countless individual boards suspended from each other, is interlocked by the surrounding airflow and shakes, affecting each of the individuals. The light generated from this shines on the place and the boards themselves reflect the light captured by the surroundings and the other boards. It also changes in response to various environments, such as this place, external influences and people. This is exactly like the society in which we live, where each relationship is interlinked and linked to each other to create the place. The events that are deposited in you, the receiver of these events, also have a myriad of "forms".

東京渋谷。

暗渠化された渋谷川を反転して、その上に建つ巨大建造物、宮下公園の天井面に現す。

半世紀以上前に宮下公園の脇を流れる渋谷川が地下へと姿を隠したが、この建造物に沿った地下にこの川がある事を知らない人も多いかもしれない。だが、この“流れ”は、今もなお、渋谷の都市形成に影響を与えている。再度、この流れを浮上させ、変化していくこの都市の水鏡として、ときの流れを映す“川”とした。

それぞれの時代に様々な文化が、数多くこの街で生まれ、これからもその流れは続くだろう。これらの流行の多くは刹那的に、水泡のように現れては消え、また新たな情景をつくり、世界へと流れ出た。それらを一つの大きな流れにした、多くの人々の数ある一瞬の日常の全てがスポットを浴びたわけではないが、渋谷が渋谷であること、渋谷で生まれた文化の、大切な支流だったのだと思う。

凸型に天井から下がる形状は、一枚の板に折込を入れ両脇から圧縮され、素材と重力による曲率で描かかれている。折り位置は一定の周期で、開く（次の折位置が離れたパターン）⇄閉じる（折位置が近くで連続する）パターンを繰り返す。開かれ開放された部分では、隙間から深層へと映り込み、表層で捉えた景色とがブレては重なり個の光がモアレのように見えるが、閉じた部分には、一つのまとまりとして連続して混じりあった景色が表層に現れる。

多くの出来事は支流としてあるかもしれないが、ふとした瞬間に主流になったりもする。そうした多くの出来事が複合された光は、流れ出て都市の一部となる。この立体は、この街に点在するそれぞれの情景と、この場所でこれからも生まれ変化しつづけるであろう文化を繋ぐ、“ときの流れ”を映す川となる。

Tokyo Shibuya.

The culverted Shibuya River is reversed and revealed on the ceiling surface of Miyashita Park, a huge structure built above it.

More than half a century ago, the Shibuya River, which flows alongside Miyashita Park, was hidden underground, but many people may not know that the river lies underground alongside this structure. However, this "stream" still influences the urban development of Shibuya to this day. We have brought this stream to the surface once again and made it a "river" that reflects the flow of time as a water mirror of this changing city.

Many different cultures have been born in this city at different times and will continue to do so in the future. Many of these trends appeared and disappeared like a momentary blister, creating new scenes and flowing out into the world. Not all of the many fleeting moments in the daily lives of many people that made them into one big trend were in the spotlight, but I think they were important tributaries of what Shibuya is, and of the culture that was born in Shibuya.

The convex shape of the ceiling is drawn by a single board folded and compressed from both sides, with curvature caused by the material and gravity. The fold positions repeat in regular cycles, in a pattern of opening (the next fold position is far away) ⇄ closing (a series of fold positions close together). In the open folds, individual lights appear as moiré, blurring and overlapping with the view captured on the surface, while in the closed folds, a continuous, blended view appears on the surface as a single coherent image.

Many events may be tributaries, but they can also become mainstream at a moment's notice. The light from the compounding of many such events flows out and becomes part of the city. This three-dimensional object becomes a river that reflects the "flow of time", connecting the different scenes scattered around the city and the culture that will continue to be born and change in this place in the future

この「かたち」になるまでにこの場所で過ごした時間、そしてこれから過ごす時間が、この立体と「この場所」にどのような変化をもたらすのだろうか。

僕がこの立体にしたことは、一枚の板に切り込みと吊す位置を決めることだけでした。この一枚の平な板は、重力、つまり地球によってかたちづくられ、周囲の状況によって変化し続けます。その変化は逆に周囲に影響を及ぼしながら共にこの場所をつくる、「地球にまかせる」ことを考えた作品シリーズです。

普段から、このシリーズのそれぞれの立体を金属で制作するにあたり、いつも紙などでスタディを繰り返すのですが、数日すると、湿度や風などの周りの状況によって、当初つくられたかたちとは異なる複雑な曲線へと自然と変化していきます。これは、変化の連鎖と向き合うことを考えさせられる過程でもありました。

この場所では、紙と金属の素材それぞれで構成された二つの群が配されています。

二つの群にはそれぞれの個性によって形状変化に時間差があり、群としてのまとまりはもちろん個別にも各々にこの場所と関係を築きます。

金属の群では、重力によりかたちが変化したあとの形状は吊った直後にある程度安定しますが、空気の流れにより回転して光の受け方が変わるので、浮遊する反射光は常に変化しながら周囲に大きな影響を及ぼします。ただ、周囲の状況によっては比較的長い時間をかけて徐々に、かたちも当初とは違うものにもなっていきます。

紙の群では、重力による形状の変化が始まった直後から、数分もしくは数時間や数日の割と短時間に、この場所の湿度や空気の流れ、人の動きなどの状況によって形状が変化しながら、かたちづくられていきます。また、その変化とともに常に異なる影を「この場所」は纏い、日々装いは変わります。

この場所を過ごす「それぞれ」は、同じ時間、同じ場所にいても、過ごした時の堆積は異なるのです。それは川の流れの中で石が削られ変化するように、時の流れの中で各々がこの場所とどのように関係を築くかで、それぞれの姿をみせてくれます。

これらの群が「この場所」で過ごした時間はほんのわずかですが、地球はもちろん、もっと身近な周囲の小さな環境の変化によってつくられた「それぞれのかたち」があり、互いの関係にもそれぞれにかたちがあるのです。そして今なお、これからここで過ごす時間の分だけ、この場所でそれぞれの関係の連鎖は続いていきます。

この過ごした時がなければこの「かたち」、今の「この場所」にならないように、それぞれが過ごしたどの瞬間も、それぞれの「あなた」が今にいたる、これからの「あなた」のための大切な時間なのだと思います。

I wonder how the time I spent and will spend in this place before this 'form' will bring about changes to this three-dimensional object and 'this place'.

All I did with this sculpture was to cut a slit in a board and decide where to hang it. This single flat board is shaped by gravity, or the earth, and keeps changing according to its surroundings. This series of works considers the idea of 'letting the earth do the work', whereby the changes affect the surroundings and together they create this place. I usually repeat studies on paper and other materials when I create each of the sculptures in this series in metal, but after a few days they naturally change into complex curves that differ from their original form, depending on the surrounding conditions, such as humidity and wind. This was a process that made me think about facing the chain of change.

In this location, two groups are arranged, one made of paper and the other of metal. The two groups have a time difference in shape change according to their individual characteristics, and they build a relationship with this place individually as well as collectively as a group. In the metal group, the shape is stabilised to a certain extent immediately after it is suspended, but the air flow rotates it and changes the way it receives light, so the floating reflected light is constantly changing and has a significant impact on its surroundings. However, depending on the surrounding conditions, the shape can also gradually change over a relatively long period of time, becoming different from the initial shape. In the case of paper swarms, the shape is formed immediately after the change in shape caused by gravity begins, changing over a relatively short period of time (minutes, hours or days), depending on the humidity, air flow and movement of people in the area. The place also wears different shadows as it changes, and its appearance changes from day to day.

Each person who spends time in this place may be in the same place at the same time, but the accumulation of time spent in this place is different. Just as stones are chipped away and changed in the flow of a river, each of them shows their own appearance depending on how they build a relationship with this place in the flow of time.

Although these groups have spent only a short time in this place, they have their own forms, created by changes in the small environment around them, not to mention the earth itself, and their relationships with each other also have their own forms. And even now, for as long as we spend here, the chain of relationships will continue in this place.

Just as this 'form' and this place would not be what it is today without the time spent here, I believe that every moment spent by each of us is an important time for the 'you' that has brought each of us to the present and for the 'you' to come.

　この作品はこの"Gravity"シリーズを考えはじめた頃につくった最初の作品です。ステンレス2B材で普段取り扱われる最も薄手の0.3mmを使用し、重力を含め、周囲の環境との関わり方を考えていました。最初のこのシリーズの素材は元々曇ったような素材でとても薄いため、熱で変形が生まれないよう、手やすりで中央部分を磨き鏡面にしています。映り込んだ景色が徐々に元の素材に溶けていくようにしていあす。これは周囲が消えていくような、、、もしくは立体が周囲と同化していくように元の素材の状態をグラデーションで残しています。

　2020年の六本木での個展では、“変化”すること“変わ（え）る”ことについて考えていたので、この作品は特に重要でした。他の作品の中で、それぞれを映しながら、それぞれの作品を異なる視点から変化させる役割も担っており、一つのきっかけから変化し、それがまた異なる表情や状況をつくる、常に“移り変わっていく”景色や、この社会の状況についてをより深く考えるきっかけになったと思います。

Gravity シリーズについて

「地球にまかせる」ことを考えた作品です。重力が形をつくり、つくられたかたちは周囲の風景を変化させていきます。

　このシリーズは、一枚の板に切り込みを入れ吊るすモビール作品です。 板材はの素材はさまざまですが、例えば、ステンレスの切り口付近を鏡面に、そこから徐々に曇 った表情へと変化したものや、紙、鉄などを使用したりその素材によってもそれぞれの異なる状態をつくります。

　これらは、吊るす点、素材の状態、自然環境の変化や人との関わり、それぞれの互いの状況の変化と関わり方によって立体は変っていきます。重力という自然の摂理によって、たった一切りというきっかけが立体のかたちをつくり、周囲の景色や情報を捉えながら、もしくは影響によって、それぞれの表情を変えていくのです。

　この作品を最初に考えた頃、世界はコロナによって混乱していて、また自身も経験の無い大きな変化の中に戸惑いを隠せませんでした。最初はロンドンへ向かう時にその大きな変化を目の当たりにし、空港には人がおらず、「cancel」の電光掲示板、アジア人への風当たりの強さ、そして滞在中にも刻々と変化し、ロンドンの食品売り場は空の状態になっていました。また日本に帰った後も、外に出られない状況が続き、僕は自宅の90 x 70cmほどのテーブルの上で生まれたばかりの子供を世話しながら、何ができるかを考えなければならないこれまでと全く違う小さな社会の中での苦悩が待っていました。

　この世界は、小さな事からもっと大きな思いもよらない事も含め、一つのきっかけによって、全く自分の想像しない姿が表れたり、思いがけない変化をします。日本でも緊急事態宣言が発令されは、終え、また発令されを繰り返し今までに見たことない情景をみせていました。国外も含め社会はこの影響によって、危機的な状況を迎えたり、そして地球にとって少し良い状況をみせてくれたり。

　これからどのようにこの世界が進んで行くのかはわかりませんが、めまぐるしいこの変化の連続の中で、人 が、自分が、自分を取り巻く小さな社会から世界の情勢まで、またさらには、この地球自身とどのように向き合うのかを改めて考えさせられていますし、考えていかなければいけないと、より思うようになりました。

　この立体が変化の連続と向き合いそれらに適応しながら、この地と共に歩んでいくことを考え、これからどのようにこの風景の一部としてあり続けるかを考察していきたいと思います。

This is the first piece I made when I started thinking about the Gravity series. I used 0.3 mm stainless steel 2B, the thinnest material usually used, and thought about how it interacts with its surroundings, including gravity. The material for this first series was originally cloudy and very thin, so to avoid deformation caused by heat, the central part was polished with a hand file to create a mirror surface. The reflected scenery gradually melts into the original material. The original material is left in a gradation so that the surroundings disappear, or the three-dimensional object assimilates with its surroundings.

　This work was particularly important for my solo exhibition in Roppongi in 2020, as I was thinking about 'change' and 'transformation'. It also plays the role of changing each work from a different perspective while reflecting each other in the other works, and it is a work that changes from one trigger to another, creating a different look and situation, and that constantly "changes" the landscape and the situation of our society. I believe that it has provided an opportunity to think more deeply about the constantly "changing" landscape and situation of our society.

-About the Gravity series- This work is based on the idea of "letting the earth take its course". Gravity creates shapes, and these shapes change the surrounding landscape.

　This series of mobiles is made by cutting a slit in a board and hanging it. The material of the board varies, for example, stainless steel with a mirror surface around the cut edge, from which the surface gradually changes to a cloudy look, paper, iron, etc., creating different states depending on the material.

　The three-dimensional objects change according to the point where they are hung, the state of the materials, changes in the natural environment, human interaction, and the way in which they interact with each other. Through the natural order of gravity, a single cut creates the shape of a three-dimensional object, and the expression of each changes as it captures or is influenced by the surrounding landscape and information.

　When I first conceived of this work, the world was in turmoil due to the corona, and I could not hide my bewilderment in the midst of such a huge change, which I had never experienced before. At first, I saw the huge changes on my way to London, with no-one at the airport, 'cancel' electronic billboards, a strong perception of Asians, and even during my stay, the food shops in London were empty by the minute. Also, after returning to Japan, I was still unable to go outside, and I was left to suffer in a completely different small society where I had to think about what I could do while looking after my newborn child on a 90 x 70 cm table in my home.

　The world can change in small ways and even bigger unexpected ways, with a single trigger that can reveal itself in ways that are completely unimaginable or unexpected. In Japan, a state of emergency was declared and then ended, and then declared again, creating a scene never seen before. The world, including outside of Japan, has been affected by this, sometimes facing a critical situation, and sometimes showing a slightly better situation for the planet.

　I don't know how the world will progress in the future, but this dizzying series of changes is making me think again about how people, themselves, the small society around them, the world situation, and even the planet itself, should deal with the situation. I have come to think more and more that I must.

　I would like to think about how this three-dimensional body will continue to walk with the land as it faces a series of changes and adapts to them, and consider how it can continue to be a part of this landscape in the future.

A wall is one of the most important elements constructing the site as a shape of space.

It might be existence such as mother including various things occur here. This objects sticking out from wall and are device connecting people to space such as new baby connects to mother’s curve.

The parts covering surface of it, gathering center and deforming, make bumps. It is like the wall turning outward. The material bends naturally, so the shape changes a little bit by fixing order leaves from my drawing and composes whole work.

36 parts covering surface are same shape, however each of them change into different shape by the materiality and makeup whole shape naturally. Each individuality of parts express various shade depending on the situation of light and color of light on the surface.

This whorls such as finger print (trace) of light this site created by involve facing people in sequence of events accumulated on this place.

壁*はこの空間を形として私たちに伝えてくれる、場所を構成する最も重要な要素の一つです。

ここで生まれる様々の事を包括する、言うなれば母体のような存在であると考えました。新生児が最初に接続する母親の膨らみと同じく立体は、人と空間との重要な接点となるための壁から飛び出た装置となります。

この立体を構成する表面を覆うパーツは、中央に集めると変形しながら壁がめくれるように突起となります。素材がなりのまま曲がっているため、形状は取付順に応じて少しづつ私の描いた設計図から手を離れ、全体を構成していきます。表面を覆う36パーツは同一形状の板ですが、素材の特性によりそれぞれに歪なものへと変化し、自然に形状をつくりあげるのです。パーツそれぞれの個性が、光の状況に応じた様々な陰影と光の色だけを表層に浮かべ表情としてみせてくれます。めくれる様に中央へ寄せることでできた隆起した形状が、この場所がつくり出す光を収集し周囲の環境によって染められていきます。

この空間によってつくられる光の指紋（痕跡）のようなこの渦が、対峙する人をこの場所に堆積した出来事の連続へと巻き込むのです。

Profile

Kenichi Shikata (b. 1983, Kyoto) is a contemporary artist based in Tokyo and Chiba. He studied architecture at the Art and Architecture School of Waseda University. During this period, he trained under Asao Tokolo.　Using the properties of light and materials, he reveals the underlying structure of a space. His work extends beyond simply being site-specific, responding to situations shaped by the changing environment and human presence, while consciously treating physical and social constraints as his design premises. He creates sculptures and installations as devices through which viewers and the environment interact, allowing the space to be continuously renewed.

He has participated in numerous art festivals, including Echigo-Tsumari Art Field Winter, Tokyo Biennale, Oku-noto Triennale, UBE Biennale (Yamaguchi Bank Prize), and the Kobe Biennale International Art in a Container Exhibition (Runner-up Prize). His major permanent installations include “Flowing time reflecting on the river,” a 3x30m large-scale ceiling work at MIYASHITA PARK (Shibuya), “GLOWING GROWING GROUND,” a series of works across six 6x3m wall surfaces at Osaka International Airport, and “Bubbles in flow” and “Soragiwa” at Kansai International Airport. His primary awards include the Chiba City Art and Culture Award for New Artists (Encouragement Award), the 13th KAJIMA Sculpture Competition (Silver Prize), the Lih Pao Sculpture Biennale Awards (Bronze Award, New Taipei, Taiwan), Arte Laguna Prize (Finalist, Venice), and the Aesthetica Art Prize (Shortlisted, York, UK).

-Statement

To me, a work is a device for reading place and understanding the world.

I primarily work with metal, while also using a variety of materials such as paper, PVC, concrete, and wood to create sculptures, installations, and photography. The forms that emerge through materials and methods adapted to specific places and environments become points of departure for transforming the conditions of a place through the interaction between viewers and their surroundings.

A common thread throughout my practice is an inquiry into how environments, human relationships, and perception shape the structure of the world. In the Eye of the Machine series, composed in the manner of industrial machinery, I presented forms of spatiality generated through perception. In the Ray series, through a sequence of phenomena derived from the radial arrangement of mirrored stainless steel plates, I visualized the sequence of events that shape the world. Furthermore, in the Gravity series, created by making incisions in a single sheet of metal to visualize gravity and allowing form to be shaped by the Earth, I have explored how works take form through an engagement with conditions that operate beyond human intention, such as gravity itself.

These works do more than demonstrate relationships with the environment; they invite viewers to actively reconsider the site-specificity of a place and the structures of society through their encounter with the work. By connecting with the surrounding environment and the people who engage with it, the work holds an expansiveness that does not conclude within itself as a singular object.

Through these works, I have come to consider the surrounding environment and society as inseparable from us―fundamental elements that constitute who we are. For me, to understand the world means to expand my own space through relationships with what surrounds me. The role of the work as a device for encountering and reflecting on the structures of place and society also becomes a means through which I engage in dialogue and connection with the world.

プロフィール

四方 謙一 / シカタ ケンイチ（1983年京都府生まれ）は、東京と千葉を拠点に活動する現代美術家。早稲田大学芸術学校にて建築を学ぶ。在学時より野老朝雄氏に師事。彼の作品は光や素材の特性を用いて「場」の構造を顕わにする。単なる場所性に留まらず、変化し続ける環境や人々の介在といった状況に呼応し、同時に、自身における身体的・社会的制約を条件として、意識的に設計へ組み込む。観覧者と環境が相互作用し、場が更新されていく装置として、彫刻やインスタレーションを制作する。

これまでに、越後妻有 大地の芸術祭 冬、東京ビエンナーレ、奥能登国際芸術祭、UBEビエンナーレ（山口銀行賞）、神戸ビエンナーレ アート イン コンテナ国際展（準大賞） などの芸術祭へ多数参加。主な常設作品には、MIYASHITA PARK（渋谷）の天井面に設置された3x30mの大型作品「Flowing time reflecting on the river」 や、大阪国際空港の6x3mの壁面6箇所に設置された作品群である「GLOWING GROWING GROUND」、関西国際空港での2作品「Bubbles in flow」「Soragiwa」がある。その他、主な賞歴に千葉市芸術文化新人賞奨励賞、第13回 KAJIMA彫刻コンクール　“銀賞”、Lih Pao Sculpture Biennale Awards “銅賞”（New Taipei, Taiwan）、Arte Laguna Prize “Finalist"（Venice)、Aesthetica Art Prize "Shortlisted"（York, UK） などがある。

-ステイトメント

私は、光や素材の特性を用いて場の構造を顕わにするため、金属や紙、PVCなど様々な素材で彫刻やインスタレーション、写真などを制作してきました。これらの作品は、変化し続ける環境や人々の介在といった状況に呼応し、同時に、自身の身体的・社会的な条件の中で、意識的に設計の前提とするものです。場所や環境に適応した素材と手法から生まれるその時々の「かたち」は、鑑賞者や環境との相互作用を通して、場を更新する起点となります。

私の作品に共通しているのは、環境や人との関係、認知によりかたちつくられる世界の構造を捉え直すことです。工業機械のように構成し、認知によって生じる空間性を提示した機械の眼シリーズや、RayシリーズではSUS鏡面板の放射状の配列から派生する現象の連続によって、世界の「出来事の連鎖」を視覚化しました。さらに、1枚の板に切り込みを入れ、重力を可視化させ、地球によってかたちつくられるGravityシリーズでは、自身では制御できず、抗えない自然への畏怖と、共存するための介在方法を模索してきました。そこでは重力や気象などをはじめとする人間の意図を超えて作用する条件と向き合いながら、作品がどのようにかたちつくられるか探る試みでもありました。環境との関係を示すにとどまらず、鑑賞者自身が作品を介して、土地柄や歴史、社会の構造を能動的に捉え直すための作品群でもあります。周囲の環境や介在する人々と繋がることで、作品は単体で完結しない広がりを獲得します。

これらを通して考えることは、周囲の環境と社会は、私たちとは切っても切り離せない、私たちを構成する重要な要素であるということです。私にとって世界を知るということは、私の空間を拡張していくことなのです。それぞれの地域や社会の構造に触れ、思考するための装置としての作品の在り方は、世界と繋がるための方法でもあるのです。
