RIP Ken Nordine.
In the shadow of lakefront high-rises on Chicago’s north side sits a massive turn-of-the-century house incongruous to it’s surroundings. The house stands out because it doesn’t stand out — at first. Surrounded by new development and shiny towering buildings, this Munsters-like edifice sits back from the street half-hidden by towering oak trees. Leaves blow across the property and an old iron gate creaks back and forth on it’s hinges. It’s difficult at first to discern if anyone lives there or not… maybe it’s haunted, it looks that way. What goes on in there?
Inside, for the last 60 years at least, resided a man who would have been my ideal neighbor when I was 12 years old. Or now. 20th Century America was familiar with his voice as the one that sold them Folger’s Coffee and other products via his work in radio and TV commercials and from narrating a thousand movie trailers. But in the late 1950s his after-hours gig was going into his large attic recording studio and laying down surreal, self-penned Kafka-esque monologues over a bebop beat… Word Jazz.
So long, and thanks, to the voice-over of my dreams, Ken Nordine (1920 - 2019). He would have turned 99 in April.

Kalenderblätter 22/02/2020 - 10/366 ___ #kennordine 1958 | Ken Nordine - Sounds in Space Punk + New Wave: 11/366 | Squeeze Metal Covers: 2/366 | Mountain Witch - Cold River Triple 0 Die Kalender machen der von mir auferlegten Erwartungshaltung, als Neuentdeckungsquelle, alle Ehre. Drei mal „Never Heard“. Statistik 2019: 59/365 https://www.instagram.com/p/B83E55po1NM/?igshid=5ot9g36l6wd1

His improvisational poetry, which he called “word jazz,” attracted admiring collaborators like Fred Astaire, Jerry Garcia, Tom Waits and Laurie Anderson.
R.I.P. Ken Nordine. Such an amazingly vivid voice. So easy to get lost in his albums. Love this one and “Colors” (which has music hard panned left and voice and extra bits hard panned right). Clever, and perfectly delivered. . #albumcoverart #albumcover #cd #kennordine #wordjazz #jazzamatazz #voiceover #voiceoverartist #soundpainting (at Oslo, Norway) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt9bjXch9nz/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1gbhvxa5q9497
