elizabeth winces as she forces herself to sit up when paul enters the room. she tries to smile at him, but the throbbing ache coming from her side makes it difficult. “hey.” her voice is hoarse, water would be nice. maybe later. guilt is painted all over his face as he approaches the bed she’s resting on. his words make her frown & her hand rises to stop him from speaking.
bold to do such a thing to a herald.
“stop. don’t–” she hisses in pain as she tries to reach out, to hold his hand & comfort him. “—don’t be blaming yourself. that outpost didn’t stand a chance against the resistance. they don’t care who they kill. as long as the people on the other end are with the project—they’ll gun us all down.” elizabeth frowns when she says that out loud. it’s sad and unfair, but true. the violence paul’s brothers & sister have created brought out the resistance. fueled their anger and some sort of fantasy of becoming a martyr to stop every last seed & their plans.
“none of this is your fault, paul.” she offers him a small smile, wincing as she leans back to try and relieve the pain. “i wish things could have gone differently for us, for the project. but…” she leaves those words unsaid. joseph is THEIR prophet. not hers. he’s paul’s brother, his family. not hers. she can blame the others for the violence. not paul.
FAITH and her bliss.
JOHN and his torture.
JACOB and his soldiers.
JOSEPH and his fantasy.
she’s doubted before—she always doubts but. the project ensures safety. safety for her kid. paul is a kind man, one not a lot would suspect given his name—-his family. he doesn’t wish harm on anyone—not from what she’s seen. “if anything, i should be apologizing. you told me the outpost was already on edge. that it might not be safe and i still went.” elizabeth offers a somber smile before her eyes shut with a sharp breath, her hand leaving his to grasp the bandage around her side. “it’s no one’s fault but my own that i got shot. don’t blame yourself for everything you can’t control, paul.” blue hues open to meet his. “you’ll drive yourself mad.”
