Dex can’t recall the last time any sensation of leisure overtook his body. What he’s feeling is worlds beyond; warm, boneless, sated. He’s sunken into the couch, one with cushions and corduroy fabric, his arms wide eagle over the backrest, hand flexing, unflexing to keep from touching the girl beside him. The bottle of mela verde sits forgotten on the coffee table — until french tipped fingertips unscrew the top, that is, using it in place of a shot glass, the green apple flavor mixing with the bitterness of alcohol until her expression sours as though she’s sucked on a lemon. A corner of Dex’s lips perks. A heartbeat later, a deep chuckle rumbles from his chest. “I told you you wouldn’t like it,” he rasps, tilting his head to let his lazy gaze trace the curve of her back, the plumpness of her ass where it’s settled above her heels. She looks pretty on her knees, leaning forward on her palms, arching her spine to reach for the bottle’s throat. His eyes linger on her toes, the matching pedicure, the way they curl when she takes another shot in defiance, all to keep from proving him right. He’s slightly saddened he missed it the first time. “Being stubborn won’t make it taste better.” “It’ll make you right, and that’s worse.”

“Feels good, doesn’t it?” He rumbles, sly smirk tugging one corner of his mouth. The rhythmic beating of skin on skin continues with a lewd mewl as her answer, her brain turning to mush inside her skull. “I know, pretty baby, I know you missed me. Here, come here.” Tugging her hips, he plants one foot, shifting his knee to the side. Her movements turn shallow, her body fighting his strong grip in pursuit of pleasure that just won’t come when she has only his tip and an inch to work with. She needs more, craves it all. For him, it’s torture, the soft walls of her pussy hugging his girth at the most pleasurable spot, making his breaths shaky, pulling grunts he can’t bite back.

“Life is a bullfight. There are the spectators, abstracted to the complexities of such a show, leafing through their coin pochettes to purchase wines and salty bites. In a world separate from those below, they fail to perceive that without their demand for entertainment, there would be no show at all. There are the bulls, for whom exploitation is their birthright. Violence is their disposition, an answer to all that vexes them, an attempt at freedom, for the arena is a gilded cage. There are the venatores, finely dressed and glimmering of gold, grasping for control over a phenomenon of greed that outsizes them, and will outlive them. Their puppeteering is destructive, unruly, a prediction of their own demise. Finally, there are the red capes. Beautiful, powerless, disposable, they are the perfect sacrifice, hiding the vibrance of blood within their threads. The venator waves the cape, the provoked bull rushes, the crowd gasps — when bloodshed consumes the scene, leaving both man and animal dead, it still isn’t realized that the venator has no authority over the beast, the crimson beauty of the cape means nothing to the bull, for it was blind of color all along. A purposeless performance of nature that continues through history, in which even those in the audience do not leave unscathed. “The only comfort is the dirt beneath the dying bodies. We are born from it, we return to it. This, and taxes, is guaranteed.”
