Commander Ashiro's brand new toy, "Keraunos" || Kaiju No. 8 Season 2 finale episode 23
“I must balance vengeance and mercy. I must act in account to your life and account to those you have hurt.”
Here we have Keraunos, the title character of my developing graphic novel, versus his father, Zeus, in an epic climactic battle for the fate of the world. I have probably drawn this composition at least five times, trying to get it right, but this is by far the most detailed and complete rendering that I’ve been satisfied with. It’s certainly the most intricate digital composition I’ve made thus far, and I’m only just beginning.
I really do have high hopes for this project, seeing as I’ve been working on it for three years, but hopefully you all will see a finished product by the end of this year. Not necessarily a complete novel, but a set of chapters to show what’s to come. Graphic novels take a helluva long time to develop! What can I say! Anyways, I hope you enjoy this piece. Stay tuned as usual. :)
EDIT: I’ve made a blog here to compile all of my work. I’d appreciate a follow or two. And some reblogs would be nice. :)
I made some avatars for my trolls on ToyHouse :)

Keraunos (2023)
This is a project that I started back in 2020, when I came across a story in Greek mythology that didn’t technically happen. In the Greek poet Hesiod’s Theogony, or the Ancient Greek creation myth, he states that before Zeus was married to Hera, he was married to Metis, a daughter of one of the titans, but it was foretold by Gaia that their children would overthrow him; first a wise daughter, and then a son more powerful than Zeus to overthrow him. Zeus would not allow this to happen, so he subsumed Metis’s essence into his mind to act as his conscience.
However, Metis was pregnant with their first child at the time, so eventually one day Zeus gets a splitting headache and cracks open his skull, whereupon Athena, Goddess of war and wisdom, is born fully grown in full battle armor. Then…. Greek mythology just kind of happens? And the story about Zeus’s future usurper isn’t touched upon again. Well then, I thought “What if it did happen? What would that look like? What if this kid was born?” And there came the inception of Keraunos, the ragnarok of Greek Mythology (and no, I have not played the God of War video games).
This story examines and asks questions about the democratic process and the functions of a representative democracy, government, and why our society is the way it is. What is democracy? What is fascism? What is anti-fascism? What does justice mean? And also exploring how that can tie into bigger existential questions of systems of power, religion, and beliefs. This isn’t just a story of “The king is dead, long live the king,” but a story examining these systems of power that we’ve constructed and what our beliefs mean to us.
This is an initial concept of first chapter (pages 1-10) or prelude to the story, and two “highlight pages’“ for what’s to come in the future, featuring Keraunos’s “birth” or debut, and a double page spread of Keraunos visiting with Khaos, the embodiment of the universe and all creation. This is an entire semester’s worth of research and truly a labor of love. I will be sure to provide updates on this as soon as I am able to. You can check out @keraunos-graphic-novel for future developments. Until then, I hope you enjoy!
@comicaurora and once again thanks to Overly Sarcastic Productions for inspiring this entire venture. :)
Here is test page number 1 for Keraunos! In this scene, Hermes, the messenger god, joins his sister Athena, overlooking a massive wildfire laying destruction to crops and homes in the Greek countryside; an act of Zeus’s wrath. Hermes narrows his eyes at this in concern, then dispels the flames with a blast of wind in an act of charity. Athena nods in approval, but is still unnerved by the series of events that has unfolded since Zeus’s madness has grown.
More art will be on the way throughout the end of this year! There are still some things I am trying to figure out in regards to my production process, but so far I am hopeful about how things will turn out. Fingers crossed 🤞
“Erelong shall this mortal condition be smote by fire and flood as Lord Zeus’s goodwill fades. The clouds brew upon his head.”
Here he is; the big bad. Zeus, on the edge of madness, waiting for his destroyer. So far I’m working on trying to finish at least the last few pages out of ten before Monday. There’s supposed to be 19 pages for chapter 1, but man has this been a learning process! Usually there’s a whole team of people working on stuff like this in the industry but with just little old me it’s a lot more than I expected. I really do appreciate how much hard work goes into making comics and graphic novels; they are truthfully a labor of love and certainly no small feat, nor anything to take for granted. Stay tuned!
